Chapter 1
The Eviction Notice in the Rain
Rain tapped the windshield like tiny fingers. Marcus Vance gripped the wheel and watched the truck’s gas light blink.
“Home soon,” he said.
Leo whimpered in his car seat. Toby kicked the back of Marcus’s seat. Sam sat quiet beside them, holding the red folder that contained their final eviction warning.
“Dad,” Sam said, “what does evic… evic…”
“It means we have to leave,” Marcus said.
The words felt cold. Colder than the rain.
He saw Sarah’s handwriting on an old paper tucked inside the folder. Sarah was gone. The world said it was a car accident. Marcus knew grief had no neat ending, only empty chairs and bills that still came.
The truck coughed.
“Please,” Marcus whispered. “Not now.”
Ahead, a silver car sat crooked on the shoulder. Its hood was up. A woman stood beside it, soaked from head to toe.
Marcus drove past.
Then he looked at his boys in the mirror. Sam was watching him. Toby had stopped kicking. Leo hugged a blue stuffed bear.
Marcus sighed and turned the truck around.
The woman lifted both hands when he stopped. “Don’t come closer.”
Her voice shook, but her chin did not.
Marcus lowered his window. Rain blew inside. “You need help?”
“No.”
Behind her, one tire sagged flat.
Marcus glanced at the dark road. “That tire says yes.”
She almost smiled. It was a small, tired thing. Her cheek was bruised yellow and purple.
Marcus stepped out. “Stay in the truck. Boys, lock the doors.”
“Dad,” Sam said, “is she hurt?”
The woman looked toward the trees. “I’m fine.”
Marcus heard the lie. He knew what people sounded like when they were trying to keep fear from spilling out.
He changed the tire while freezing rain slid down his neck. The woman stood close enough for him to smell wet wool and peppermint.
“You should not stop for strangers,” she said.
“I know.”
“Then why did you?”
Marcus tightened the last lug nut. “Because my boys are watching.”
Her eyes met his. For one quiet second, the storm seemed to fade.
Then lights appeared far down the road.
Not one car. Two.
The woman went pale. “You have to go.”
Marcus looked at the headlights, then at her bruised face.
“Who are they?”
She grabbed his sleeve. “Please.”
The truck sputtered again.
Marcus opened the passenger door. “Get in.”
“I’ll bring danger to your children.”
“You already brought it to this road.”
Her hand stayed on his sleeve. “My name is Marla Kensington.”
Marcus pulled her inside and slammed the door.
The headlights grew brighter.
He climbed behind the wheel, locked every door, and reached for the gearshift.
“Hold on,” he said.
Marla stared at him. “You don’t even know me.”
“No,” Marcus said, starting the truck. “But I know what fear looks like.”
The truck lurched forward. Behind them, the two cars turned onto the shoulder.
And Marcus drove his boys - and Marla - straight into the storm.
