Kindness At School

Maya Thompson hurried toward the playground, where the swings creaked in the warm afternoon air. She could smell the grass and hear sneakers tapping on the blacktop. Recess was usually her favorite part of the day. Today, she hoped to join a game near the swings.

“Come on, Maya!” called her friend Leo. “We are making a chalk road!”

Maya smiled and picked up a blue piece of chalk. She drew a loop for a race track. The chalk felt dusty on her fingers, and Leo’s road curled like a long noodle.

Then a loud voice came from the corner by the fence.

“Nobody wants your road,” said Jordan. “Go play somewhere else.”

Maya stopped drawing. Jordan stood near the swings with two children. Jordan pointed at the chalk lines.

“Your road is silly,” Jordan added.

Maya looked at Leo. His smile faded. The corner suddenly felt small, even though the playground was wide. The swings squeaked. The fence seemed very close.

“I am going to finish my road,” Maya said softly.

Jordan laughed. “You can’t make us move.”

Maya tried to keep drawing, but her hand felt stiff. She moved to the other side of the swings. There was a bright patch of grass, and a ladybug crawled over a leaf. Maya took one step toward it.

“Hey! We are still talking to you,” Jordan called.

Maya felt awkward. She wanted to be polite, but she also wanted to feel safe. Leo touched her sleeve.

“We can go together,” he said.

Maya nodded. “We can say, ‘Please stop. We are moving away now.’”

They walked toward the benches. Maya kept her eyes on the teacher near the gate. She did not run or push. She stayed beside Leo.

“Please stop,” Maya said in a calm voice. “We are moving away now.”

Jordan followed them. “That chalk road is still silly!”

Maya’s cheeks grew warm. She wanted to hide behind the bench, but she remembered something important: kindness did not mean staying where words hurt. Being kind also meant taking care of yourself and asking an adult for help.

Maya walked to Ms. Patel, the recess teacher.

“Ms. Patel,” she said, “Jordan keeps using mean words near the swings. Leo and I moved away, but Jordan followed us. Can you help us find a safe place to play?”

Ms. Patel bent down so she was close to Maya’s eyes. “Thank you for telling me. You made a safe choice. We will handle this together.”

Maya felt her shoulders relax. Ms. Patel walked with them to a sunny table near the garden. But behind them, Jordan’s voice still called from the swings.

Maya held the blue chalk and looked at the empty table. What kind picture could she and Leo draw there to welcome everyone?
