Preview: Move to Scotland.
A short excerpt from “Move to Scotland.”. The full book contains 4 chapters and 1,219 words.
Emily returned to Edinburgh 2 weeks later. But I was pining for her. We talked on the phone. Oh by the way, this was well before smart phones, whassup etc. so phone, letter or carrier pigeon was the norm. After another year, I decided to move to Scotland. Emily & I were head over hells in love, so we had to somehow live together, either in London or Scotland. I moved to Scotland, in 1984. I arrived there around January, bloody cold, there was ice, and a horrible wind. It felt like minus 5. I thought, what the hell am I doing. Going to Scotland for a girl! I must be insane. But nop, I was in love, we were in love and love climbs any mountain. I moved into a bed site, very small, one bedroom, including kitchen and shared bathroom. At least there was a double bed. After a year we had our first augment, can’t remember what it was about, but I stormed out of the bed & straight into the gym. Took my rage out in the gym & my body. I remember doing calve raises, set after set. Totally destroyed them. It felt good. Got home to my bedsite, Emily wasn’t there. Had a show in the shared bathroom. Calves felt very tight and very stiff. Went to bed. Woke up very late for work, went to stand & collapsed onto my knees, I thought WTF…. then pain was in my right calve. I thought crap, this isn't good. Then I went to move again, then more pain. I shouted out to my neighbour next door, in the other bedsite, he came running in after pushing the flimsy lock on the door open. Saw me on the floor, wincing in pain. I explained that my calves, especially the right one, were really hurting and swollen. He called the ambulance, which I did not want, but he did, and I also asked him to call Emily. Which he did, but she was at work. He left MSG with her mother. An ambulance arrived and took me to Miles Mark Hospital NHS. By the time it came and arrived at the hospital, it was around 60 minutes. I remember in hospital the nurses and doctors asking what I was doing, I explained, without the argument. It is getting late but no Emily. It is almost 7pm, I am getting worried and my right carve is now killing me. They gave me some intravenous drug, and the pain slipped away & I fell asleep, emergency ward. I woke later, with Emily looking at me and holding my right hand. I smiled. I tilted my head and noticed we was in a different long room, with 4 or 5 other beds, all occupied. I said to Emily, what happened, she said I wouldn't wake up, apparently she arrived around 7:30pm when I was sleeping, and when they tried to wake me, they couldn’t. No idea what they tried to do but I am in the ward with 4 or or 5 other people. I went to sit up a bit, but some pain in my chest & lower left side, in my back, and my calves were on fire. I put my head back on the triple pillows and fell asleep again. Emily stayed the night, and went to work the next morning. When I woke, she was gone, but this time I was coaching a bit, and more damn pain in my chest and lower back. I thought, what the hell is going on. The nurses were going back and forth collecting blood, checking my pulse. That night, I became worse, coaching up blood, apparently shouting out in pain. This I can’t remember but was told by another occupant who had yellow jaundice next to my bed, a week+ later. Well, he said he and the other guys had bets on whether I would survive this week. I was in a bad way, so they had a bet…… The way this guy said this, made me burst out laughing, big mistake, I was still heaving bloody & chest hurting. The nurse came in, gave me something, which I had a drip in my right arm, and within about 20 seconds I was flying, no pain, well not much. I remember before the nurse gave me this, she was having a go at the guy who bet on my life with the others, apparently I was that bad, I had a blood clot on my lung (called Thrombosis). Damn huge, which had moved up from my damaged calves & could have landed on a few places. One the brain, two the heart or three the lung. Which sort of gives you pneumonia, the body tries to fix the problem by killing the affected area with liquid, all fine, but that liquid is filling up your lungs and killing you. So really I was lucky, in a way. If it hit my brain, that could have easily been a stroke; ‘COME BACK TO THAT LATER’ or the heart, meaning a heart attack, so the lung(s), if I had to choose, lung(s). Anyway, if it wasn’t for this guy's dead pan hummer I think I would have had some lasting problem. By the way this happened 8 times from 1984 to 1990. 2, 3, & 5 were bad also. The 3rd time they put me on Warfarin tablets for life. Effectively rat poison, for humans of course. My blood is checked weekly or monthly, depending, but with all the checks I still end up in hospital, all over the place. Scotland, London and ultimately in Australia
