Chapter 1
The Locked Hallway in School
Maya Hart stopped beside the trophy case and listened.
Tap. Tap-tap.
The sound came from the wall near the old music room. Rutherford Elementary was quiet after school. The floors smelled like lemon soap, and the last sunlight made gold squares on the lockers. Maya hugged her library book and leaned closer.
Tap-tap. Scrape.
“That wall is not supposed to make noises,” she whispered.
Her friend Leo stood at the end of the hall with his backpack. “Maybe a squirrel?”
“A squirrel in the wall?”
Leo shrugged. “A very good student squirrel.”
Maya smiled, but the sound came again. She pressed her palm to the wall. A cool line ran beneath her fingers. Then a narrow door appeared between two lockers. It had a brass handle and a tiny keyhole.
Maya blinked. The door had not been there that morning.
A paper was stuck to it. In neat, gray writing, it said:
ONLY WALK WHERE THE BELLS RING.
Leo hurried over. “We should tell Mrs. Bell.”
Maya reached for the handle, then stopped. The hallway was empty, and the door looked as if it had been waiting just for her.
“I’ll only peek,” she said.
The door opened with a soft click. Beyond it was a hallway that looked like the school, but not quite. The ceiling lights hummed. The air smelled like dust and old crayons. Maya took one step inside.
Behind her, the door clicked shut.
Maya turned the handle. It would not move.
“Leo?” she called.
No answer came. Instead, a bell rang far away.
Maya walked toward the sound. The hallway bent left. Then it bent left again. She passed the same blue locker three times. On the fourth pass, the locker had moved to the other side.
Maya’s hands felt cold. She took out her pencil and drew an arrow on the wall. When she returned, the arrow pointed the opposite way.
“This school is moving,” she said.
A small brass key slid from a crack under the baseboard. It landed on the floor with a bright ping. Maya picked it up. A label hung from it: WEST WING.
At the end of the hallway, she found a red door. The key fit. With a turn, the lock opened.
Maya pulled the door wide. A darker hallway waited beyond it. Old classroom doors lined both sides, and somewhere inside, a bell gave one quiet ring.
Maya took a slow breath and held the key tightly. She had found a way out of the first hallway, but the school had led her somewhere new.
She kept one hand on the door and stepped into the safe, steady light behind her. Maya knew that asking for help was the bravest way to face a mystery.
