Chapter 1

The Little Crow Who Could

Chapter 1

Once upon a time, uhhhhh, there was a crow. Wait, wait - once upon a... crap, never mind. Today, dear reader, you’ll be hearing the story of Billy the crow. This is a tale of his misadventures, heavy on the “mis” since he’s only a hatchling; I'll laugh about that later. I'm on the clock. I should probably read from the script. Let me start again: Once upon a time, there was a baby crow named Billy. Billy was the runt of the group, but he was oh so determined to explore, to adventure, and to see the world after seeing an adventurer named Indiana Jones on a human machine called a TV, or television. I should stretch that word; it rolls off the tongue nicely. But I’m off track again.

Billy asks his mom one day, “Caw, caw, Mama, Mama, can I leave the nest?” And Mama says, “Caw, caw, baby bird, baby bird, you can’t.” Billy asks why. Mama says, “No.” Billy says, “Why, Mama?” Heartbroken, Billy goes to a corner of the nest to cry, and he cries and cries all night, wailing and filling the air. He cries until his voice gives out, and then he wakes up with dried tears on his face and annoyed at his mother. He angrily asks his mother why he can’t, and his mother responds, “Why what?” Billy says, “Why can’t I fly? Why can’t I see the world?” His mother says, “Because the world is filled with humans. There are some good ones, but they’re mostly bad, and they hate crows.”
