Chapter 1

The Busy Morning Loud Moment

“Where is my blue work folder?” Dad Marco called from the kitchen.

Lina sat at the little table, holding a warm piece of toast. The kitchen smelled like butter and cinnamon. Sunlight made a bright square on the floor.

Dad hurried from the table to the counter. His phone buzzed. The toast popped up. A spoon clattered.

“I need my folder, my keys, and my lunch!” he said. His voice grew big, like a drum in a small room.

Lina’s shoulders went up. The busy kitchen felt too full. Dad was not trying to scare her. He was worried and rushed. Still, the loud sounds made her tummy feel wiggly.

“I can help,” Lina said.

She looked under the chair. No folder. She checked beside the bread box. No folder there, either.

Dad opened a drawer too fast. “I cannot find anything today!”

Lina froze.

Dad saw her small hands squeeze together. He stopped. His face looked tired.

“Lina,” he said softly, “my loud voice is because I am upset about being late. It is not because of you.”

Lina looked at him. “Can we make it quieter?”

Dad took one slow breath. Then another. The air smelled like toast.

“Yes,” he said. “Let us try.”

Lina found the blue folder under a clean dish towel. Dad found his keys in the pocket of his jacket. His lunch was still on the counter, beside the apple.

They walked to the hallway by the front door. A shoe lay on its side. A sock hung from the coat hook. The morning was still messy.

Dad sat on the little bench and put both feet on the floor.

“Quiet break,” he said. He closed his eyes for three slow counts.

Lina held up one finger. “I can be the quiet helper.”

Dad smiled. “What will a quiet helper do?”

“Point to the folder. Check the lunch. Use a soft voice.”

“That sounds just right.”

Lina pointed. “Folder.”

“Thank you,” Dad said.

“Lunch.”

“Thank you.”

Then Lina gently placed the loose shoe beside the other shoe. Dad gave her a hug that smelled like coffee and soap.

“We may still be late,” he said. “But we can try our calm plan.”

The door opened. Cool morning air slipped in. Dad held Lina’s hand as they stepped out together.

The house was still untidy, but Lina knew something important: Dad’s loud feelings were not her fault, and kind words could help them make a calmer plan.
