Chapter 1

EVERYBODY LYING, NOBODY LEAVING

Everybody had somebody. Everybody had a secret. And nobody was innocent.

Chapter 1: Everybody Has a Past

Some people come into your life like a blessing.

Others come in looking like a blessing, acting like a blessing, and talking so sweet you start believing God finally heard your prayers.

Then, years later, you look back and wonder if that person was the answer to your prayers or the lesson you kept refusing to learn.

Kiara had no idea which one Tyrell would turn out to be.

All she knew was that at twenty-four years old, she was tired.

Tired of being hurt. Tired of being lied to. Tired of giving people pieces of herself they never seemed to know how to handle. She had just walked away from an abusive relationship with a man who had spent too much time making her feel like she was the problem.

For a while, she had believed him.

That was the thing about being with a narcissistic man. He could hurt you, watch you cry, and somehow leave the conversation convinced that you owed him an apology.

Kiara had finally gotten away from that mess in Westhaven, the California city she had once called home. She was trying to put her life back together, trying to remember who she had been before somebody else’s selfishness became her everyday reality.

She had two daughters to think about.

Mia, her oldest, was already teaching Kiara that motherhood came with a kind of love that could break your heart and put it back together in the same breath. Armani, four years younger, was another piece of her world that she would protect with everything she had.

Their fathers were two different men, and neither relationship had turned out the way Kiara had once imagined.

But that was a story for another day.

At least, that was what she told herself.

She wasn’t looking for another man. She wasn’t trying to fall in love. And she sure as hell wasn’t looking for somebody else’s problems to add to her own.

She wanted peace.

A little happiness wouldn’t hurt, either.

What she didn’t know was that peace was about to become the one thing she would spend years trying to find.

And the man who would make her question everything was standing at her cousin’s apartment complex, minding everybody’s business but his own.

It was an ordinary day.

Nothing about the weather, the people walking around, or the cars pulling in and out of the apartment complex suggested that anything life-changing was about to happen.

Kiara was visiting her cousin when Tyrell noticed her.

He had been hanging around the apartment, talking and doing what men like him often did—acting like they had all the time in the world and not a single worry on their minds.

Tyrell was thirty-four years old, ten years older than Kiara, and he carried himself like a man who had seen enough of life to know how to talk his way into just about anything.

He had the confidence of somebody who was used to getting attention.

Whether he deserved it was another question.

He looked over at Kiara, then turned toward her cousin.

“Who is that?”

Her cousin glanced in Kiara’s direction.

“That’s my cousin.”

Tyrell looked again.

“Your cousin?”

“Yeah, my cousin. Why?”

Tyrell gave a little smile.

“Nothing. I’m just asking.”

His cousin knew that look.

“Man, stop playing.”

“I’m not playing.”

“You always playing.”

Tyrell laughed, but his eyes went right back to Kiara.

Whoever she is, I need to know her name.

He didn’t know anything about her. He didn’t know what she’d been through, what kind of man she had just left, or how much work it had taken for her to start putting herself back together.

He only knew that he wanted to talk to her.

And Tyrell was not the kind of man who needed much encouragement once he wanted something.

He approached her with that familiar confidence, the kind that could make a woman roll her eyes while secretly wondering what he was going to say next.

“What’s your name?”

Kiara looked at him.

“Why?”

He grinned.

“Because I asked you.”

“Well, that don’t mean I have to tell you.”

Tyrell laughed.

“Oh, you one of them?”

“One of what?”

“One of them women who act like they don’t want nobody talking to them.”

“Maybe I don’t.”
