Chapter 1
The Blue Star Calls Home
The blue star on the map began to sing.
Nova heard it as a tiny, bright chime. Liora held the map piece in both hands. Its blue light danced across the town square.
“Listen,” Nova said.
Peachy leaned close. “It sounds like a spoon tapping a teacup.”
The moon-mouse peeked from Peachy’s pocket. Rosevale was warm and bright, but the air near Asterlight Hall felt thick, like a blanket on a sunny day. Even the flowers beside the path drooped a little.
Nova’s mother and father had told her to be careful. They loved her, and Nova carried their love like a warm pocket of sunshine.
“I want to see what changed after we fixed the fountain,” Nova said.
Peachy squeezed her hand. “Then we will go together.”
They followed the blue glow to Asterlight Hall. The old doors opened with a soft creak. Inside, the back corridor smelled of dust and rain. The walls made quiet, worried sounds.
Nova’s new, gentle mind-reading magic brushed against the hall.
Afraid.
The thought was small and soft.
Nova stopped. “The hall feels afraid.”
Peachy’s golden sun charm gave a tiny glow. “We can listen. We do not have to hurry.”
Nova placed her hand on the wall. A warm golden light slipped from her fingers. The wall gave a little sigh, like someone settling under a blanket.
“Better?” Nova whispered.
The hall did not answer. The blue star sang louder.
They followed its light past a dusty mirror and a row of empty hooks. Behind the mirror, Nova found a small silver door. It had no handle. In its center was a star-shaped mark.
The map piece floated from Liora’s hand and rested against the mark.
Click.
The door opened.
Warm green light spilled across the floor. Sweet flower smells filled the corridor. Below the doorway lay a secret garden, hidden beneath Asterlight Hall. Three closed flowers grew there, each with a pale glow in its petals.
Nova took one step down.
The first flower fluttered.
Not like a happy butterfly. Its petals shook and made a soft, worried sound.
Peachy moved beside Nova. “We found the garden.”
Nova nodded. The blue star dimmed behind them, while the flower trembled again.
“We will help,” Nova said gently.
The garden answered with a quiet rustle, and the hidden door closed behind them.
