When God Calls, Start With Presence

There’s a moment that often comes before the “plan.” It’s the pause right before everything changes. Maybe you’re going about your ordinary day, or maybe you’re already feeling tired and stretched thin. And then you sense it. A nudge. A prompting. A call.

It is not usually announced with a neat outline and a motivational quote. More often, it arrives like a question you did not expect to be asked.

And your mind, being the mind it is, starts building a plan before you even have one.

“What do You want me to do?”

“How is this going to work?”

“What will it cost me?”

“What if I mess it up?”

You may not say these things out loud. But you feel them. The call is unsettling because it creates uncertainty, and uncertainty pushes us toward control. We want answers. We want clarity. We want guarantees.

So we debate. We research. We rehearse. We try to talk ourselves out of fear and into confidence using logic. Sometimes we even try to negotiate with God like faith is a contract that needs fine print.

But there’s a pattern you see in Scripture that is both simple and surprising. When God calls, faithful response begins with presence.

Not preparation first.

Not debate first.

Presence first.

That is what this book series is going to explore. In Volume 1: Presence Before the Plan, we are going to slow down and pay attention to the first step. The step that often gets skipped because we want to jump straight to “the doing.”

Let’s start where the story starts: with the moment before the plan.

The Call Comes Before the Clarity

When God calls, He does not always hand you a calendar invite and a budget spreadsheet. He often begins with a voice, a stillness, a conviction, or a moment that makes you stop.

In other words, God’s call often precedes your ability to understand it fully.

That can feel unfair. But it can also be merciful. Because if God waited until you had everything figured out, you might never move. You might stay in the safe zone of “someday” and “maybe” until the window of obedience closes.

So the call arrives. And your thoughts rush in.

You are not wrong to ask questions. Questions can be part of being wise. But when questions become a substitute for presence, something important is lost.

Presence means you respond to the person who is calling, not only to the tasks you think are coming.

Presence means you stop and turn toward God before you turn into planning mode.

Presence means you say, “Here I am,” before you say, “Here is my explanation.”

“Here I Am” is More Than a Sentence

In the Bible, one of the most recognizable first responses to God’s call is the phrase, “Here I am.” It shows up when someone realizes God is speaking. It is the posture of attention. It is the decision to respond.

But “Here I am” is not just a sentence you say to sound spiritual. It is an attitude.

It communicates, “I’m not hiding. I’m not ignoring. I’m not pretending I didn’t hear. I’m turning toward You.”

“Here I am” also communicates, “I’m available.” Not because you have everything ready, but because you are willing.

And it communicates, “I’m listening.” Not just to the request, but to the heart behind the request.

That is why presence comes before preparation. You cannot prepare well for something you are not yet present for. You can only prepare for the call once you have turned your attention fully toward God.

Faithful response begins with presence, not preparation or debate.

Why We Default to Planning and Debate

Let’s be honest. Presence is harder than it sounds.

Preparation feels productive. Debate feels protective. Planning feels like wisdom. But they can become distractions.

When God calls, planning often becomes a way to delay obedience while still feeling busy. Debate can become a way to keep emotional distance from the risk of saying yes.

Sometimes the real issue is fear. Fear of failure. Fear of sacrifice. Fear of looking foolish. Fear that you will be asked to do something you cannot do.

Fear makes us want to know the outcome first. But God rarely offers the outcome at the beginning. He offers Himself. And then He invites you to trust that He will be with you as you step.

That is why presence matters. Presence is where fear gets confronted. Presence is where you stop negotiating and start responding.

Instead of jumping straight to “What is the plan?”, presence asks, “Who is calling me, and am I available to Him right now?”

A Simple Test: Are You Turning Toward God?

Let’s make this practical. When you sense a call from God, try this simple test:

Presence asks: “Am I turning toward God in this moment?”

Preparation asks: “What do I need to do next?”

Debate asks: “Is this really God, and should I do it?”

Presence is the foundation. Preparation and debate can have their place later, but they should not be the first response.
