The people described here are real people who made real decisions under real conditions, and their decisions produced consequences that are still in motion. A person's name is one of the smallest things about them; what they did with the years they had is considerably larger. The names have been given different containers. The contents of those containers are accurate to the best of the author's ability to render them.

The BGP vulnerability is a matter of public record. RFC 1771 was published in 1995 by Yakov Rekhter and Tony Li. The vulnerability - the absence of any authentication mechanism in Border Gateway Protocol's route advertisement system, which meant that a false route injected into the BGP ecosystem would propagate globally with no technical mechanism for invalidation, affecting the entire internet in under sixty seconds - was documented, analyzed, and brought to the attention of the United States Senate in May of 1998. Seven members of the hacker collective L0pht Heavy Industries testified before the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs under their operating handles. The testimony is in the congressional record. The vulnerability they described is structurally present to this day. RPKI has been developed as a partial mitigation. It is not universally deployed. The forty-five senators who heard that testimony and did not act on it are also a matter of public record.

The Boston Marathon bombing occurred on April 15, 2013 - Patriots' Day. Two pressure-cooker devices detonated near the finish line on Boylston Street at 2:49 in the afternoon. Three people were killed. Two hundred and sixty-four people were injured. The emergency medical response on that day and in the days following involved paramedics, EMTs, police, fire, the Massachusetts National Guard, and the full activation of Boston's trauma hospital network. Camron Stevens was on shift when the reports came through. He worked. The thirty thousand dollars is real in the way that money is real when it exists, was won through reading and patience and the precise application of a method, was withdrawn through the correct use of a system that the casino had designed without reading carefully enough, and is no longer in the casino's possession. These are facts. They are rendered here as facts.

This rewritten edition is different from the original in the following specific ways: the scenes are longer. The technical work is more precisely described. The characters are more fully rendered - not because the original was imprecise, but because the understanding available to render them has deepened, and depth in a rewrite is not inflation but accuracy. The truth is the same. It is more completely here. That is the only purpose of a rewrite that is worth the time it takes.
