Chapter 1

The Attic Journal Sparks Ellie-Marie

Ellie-Marie brushed a cobweb from her sleeve and held the dusty leather journal in both hands. Sunlight slipped through the round attic window, making the dust sparkle like tiny bits of sugar. Her wild chestnut hair tickled her nose as she bent closer.

“Jasper, look at this,” she whispered.

Her loyal dog climbed over a soft pile of blankets and sniffed the journal. The leather felt dry and cool. A little gold mark was pressed into its cover. It looked like a circle with three short lines beside it.

Jasper gave a quiet woof.

“I know. It is odd,” Ellie-Marie said. “But is it a real clue, or just an old doodle?”

The attic was full of trunks, boxes, and chairs draped in white cloth. Ellie-Marie had come to find a blue ribbon for her grandmother. Instead, she had found the journal beneath a loose floorboard. Now the ribbon seemed far less important.

She opened the cover. The pages smelled like paper, wood, and a little bit of lavender. Inside were drawings of Willowbrook. There was the old library, the willow by the river, and a tall lighthouse on the cliff.

Ellie-Marie drew a quick circle around the library sketch with her finger.

“Grandmother’s house is near the library,” she said. “Maybe this mark means a place.”

Jasper padded to a dusty chest and scratched at its side.

“Good idea!” Ellie-Marie hurried over and lifted the lid. She found ribbons, wooden blocks, and a red scarf. No map. No clue.

She tried another box, but only a rain of buttons rolled across the floor.

Jasper sneezed.

Ellie-Marie giggled, then sat back on her heels. “We need to slow down. If we look at everything at once, every button will seem important.”

Together, they studied the page. The same circle and three lines appeared beside the library, the willow, and the lighthouse. Ellie-Marie copied the symbol on a scrap of paper. Then she drew three small stars next to the places.

“It matches!” she said. “These are not doodles. They point to secret places in Willowbrook.”

She reached for the journal, but her elbow bumped a stack of old quilts. The quilts slid down with a soft puff, and the journal slipped into the clutter.

“Oh, crumbs!”

Ellie-Marie and Jasper searched between the blankets and boxes. At last, she saw the gold symbol glint beneath a wooden toy boat.

She pulled the journal free and hugged it close. The first clue was clear, but the journal had hidden itself in the attic’s jumble.

Ellie-Marie smiled at Jasper. “At sunrise tomorrow, we follow the mark to the library.”

Jasper wagged his tail.

What do you think Ellie-Marie should draw beside the library symbol: a book, a star, or a tiny paw print?
