Curious Fox Starts School

Juniper’s backpack bumped against her knees as she stopped beneath the tall wooden sign: PINECONE SCHOOL.

The letters were painted green, with tiny pinecones around the edges. A warm smell of toast and cinnamon drifted from somewhere inside. Juniper lifted her nose and smiled. She had packed her red notebook, two pencils, a round apple, and a smooth blue stone for thinking.

Then she looked through the open doors.

“Where do I go?” she whispered.

The school hallway stretched farther than she expected. Coats hung on hooks. Boots stood in neat rows. Children hurried past with backpacks, lunch bags, and bright scarves. Their voices bounced from the walls.

“Room Three is this way!”

“Wait for me!”

“Did you see my - ”

Juniper held the straps of her backpack. She had imagined school many times. In her imagination, she walked in, found her classroom, and sat at a desk beside a sunny window.

In real life, there were too many doors.

A bell rang.

BONG!

The sound filled the hallway from floor to ceiling. Juniper’s ears sprang up. Her tail puffed, and her paws pressed flat against the cool floor.

For one small moment, she felt as if she had become smaller than her backpack.

“It’s only the first bell,” said a gentle voice nearby.

Juniper turned. A tall badger stood beside a doorway. She wore a blue sweater and held a basket of books. Her name was written on a little card: MRS. MAPLE.

“Are you Juniper Fox?” she asked.

Juniper nodded. “I think so.”

Mrs. Maple smiled. “That is a very good start.”

Juniper tried to smile back, but another group of children swept between them. A rabbit dropped a mitten. A squirrel called for a friend. A pair of ducklings hurried toward the water fountain, their shoes tapping like tiny drums.

Mrs. Maple stepped aside to let them pass. “Your classroom is Room Three. The pinecone picture is on the door.”

Juniper looked down the hallway. “Which way is Room Three?”

Mrs. Maple pointed. “Past the coat hooks, then left at the big window.”

Juniper glanced at the big window. It seemed very far away.

“I can walk with you,” Mrs. Maple said.

Juniper wanted to say yes. She wanted someone to show her each turn and tell her where to put her backpack. But a fox near the coat hooks was trying to pull a yellow raincoat from a crowded row. Juniper noticed the name stitched on the sleeve.

LILA.

“I can find it,” Juniper said. “I’m curious.”

Mrs. Maple’s eyes grew kind. “Curious is a wonderful thing. If you need me, I will be right here.”

Juniper took one step.

Then another.

The hallway smelled like wet coats, pencil shavings, and soap. The floor shone under the windows. Every sound seemed to hop around her: shoes squeaking, doors opening, voices calling.

Juniper passed the coat hooks. She counted them to keep her paws moving.

“One, two, three…”

A child hurried past, and Juniper lost count.

She stopped beside a row of cubbies. Each cubby had a name card. Some names were easy to read. Some had curly letters that twisted like vines.

Juniper searched for her own name.

JUNIPER FOX.

She found it on the third cubby, below a purple scarf. Her name card had a tiny fox drawn beside it. Juniper touched the picture with one claw.

“This is mine,” she said softly.

The words made her feel a little bigger.

She slipped off her backpack and tried to place it in the cubby. The bag caught on the scarf. Juniper tugged once. The scarf slid out and landed on the floor.

“Oh!” Juniper picked it up quickly.

A small mouse stood beside her. “That’s mine,” she said.

“I’m sorry,” said Juniper. “It got caught.”

The mouse took the scarf. “That happens. My cubby is very full.”

Juniper looked at the crowded hooks and bags. “Maybe things need more room.”

The mouse nodded. “I’m Lila.”

“I’m Juniper.”

Lila tucked her scarf into the cubby. “Are you going to Room Three?”

“I’m trying to.”

“Me too.” Lila pointed toward the big window. “I think it’s that way.”

Juniper felt glad to have a direction. “Let’s go together.”

They walked side by side, but the hallway grew busier near the window. Children moved in lines, then stopped, then moved again. A cart squeaked. Someone laughed. A door clicked shut.

Juniper’s paws began to feel warm. She could not hear her own steps anymore. She could not tell which sound belonged to which thing.

At the big window, she saw three doors.

One had a picture of a moon.

One had a picture of a watering can.

One had a picture of a pinecone.

“There!” Juniper said.

She took a quick step toward the pinecone door. At that exact moment, the bell rang again.

BONG!

Juniper flinched. Her backpack slipped from one shoulder and fell with a soft thump. Her blue thinking stone rolled across the floor.

“Wait!” she cried.

The stone passed under a bench.

Juniper dropped to her knees and reached for it, but feet moved all around her. She pulled her paws close and sat back against the wall.

The hallway felt too loud. The bright window felt too bright. Juniper’s ears folded down.
