Chapter 1

The music from the television bubbled through the Watterson living room like a fizzy drink. Gumball Watterson sat cross-legged on the carpet, eyes wide as the colorful dancers on the screen flipped and sang. The tune thumped so warmly that the lamps seemed to sway with it, and Darwin Watterson tapped his foot in time, his small hands clapping every few beats. Outside, rain pattered against the window, making the house smell faintly of wet pavement and pancakes Nicole would later make for breakfast.

Anais Watterson sat on the arm of the couch, feet swinging, reading a comic so close to her nose that her pink ears folded with concentration. Richard Watterson snored on the sofa, a half-eaten sandwich resting on his belly, soft snores puffing like tiny clouds. Nicole moved between the kitchen and the living room, wiping counters and humming along to a different part of the song. The television announced a trailer for a spectacular new movie crossover: The Amazing World Of Gumball VS Kpop Demon Hunters. Gumball's eyes sparkled. Darwin's tail fin fluttered. Even Anais put her comic down.

"Do you think they'll do the dance challenge?" Gumball whispered, leaning toward Darwin. He imagined flashing lights and giant stages, and somewhere in all that glitz the heroic Huntrix would use music to chase off a spooky shadow. Darwin grinned, the idea of music as a real kind of magic making his scales tingle.

The mood changed when the phone dinged. Nicole’s face tightened as she read a message. "It's a message from the Master of Games," she said quietly. Gumball and Darwin exchanged looks. The Master of Games was a strange, serious figure who loved rules and puzzles and sometimes invited people to contests they couldn't refuse. The trailer had already hinted that this Master might be involved in the movie's world-bending events, but this message felt personal.

"We're invited to a special premiere," Nicole explained, trying to sound excited but a little worried. "The Master of Games wants the whole family to come. He says it will be…an experience." Richard sighed in his sleep. Anais tilted her head, suspicious and clever as always. "What's an 'experience'?" she asked.

Gumball stood and practiced a heroic pose in the middle of the room, chest out and paws balled into pretend fists. "An experience is where we get free snacks and sit next to movie stars!" he declared. Darwin admired Gumball's certainty and hopped up to check the calendar on the fridge, where a colorful sticker read PREMIERE NIGHT.

The problem arrived gently, like a slow-changing note that didn't fit the song. On the night of the premiere, the Wattersons stood at the ornate doors of the theater, lights sparkling like hundreds of tiny moons. The Master of Games greeted them with a bow and a strange smile that tugged at the corner of his face. He led them into a velvet room filled with warm light and the smell of popcorn. On the raised stage, the Huntrix - Rumi, Mira, and Zoey - appeared in shimmering costumes, voices like bells. Gumball felt his chest swell with pride at being so close to stars who could both dance and protect the world.

But when the crowd went silent for the film's opening, a hush more serious than excitement fell across the room. Suddenly, the Master of Games clapped his hands once and the lights snapped out. The space dimmed into shadow, and in that dark a small, whispering shape flicked like a paper ghost and slipped behind the curtains. For a flicker of a second, Anais - sitting quietly between Gumball and Darwin - was gone. Zoey, who had been chatting with Anais about choreography, whispered a frightened, tiny sound and then she too was gone.

Gumball's stomach dropped. He reached for Anais, for Zoey, for the safety of his family and the singers he had come to admire. The Master of Games' smile looked different now, like a puzzle missing its final piece. "Weird," Darwin said, voice small. The theater's air tasted suddenly metallic and cold, like a forgotten school hallway in winter. The song on the screen was cut short, leaving a single note that trembled and faded.

Gumball had one clear objective: get Anais and Zoey back. The obstacle was a strange trap - someone had taken them in a way the Wattersons had never seen. The outcome felt big and important; if Gumball couldn't help, his family and new friends would be far away and something inside him tightened like a drum.

He tried the first thing that felt like him: bravado. Gumball puffed up and announced, "I will rescue them!" He dashed toward the curtains, dragged Darwin with him by the sleeve, and yanked them open with a dramatic flourish. The backstage smelled of dust and paint and the candy-sweet of old costumes. A single shoe lay abandoned on the floor. Footsteps shushed somewhere beyond the heavy door. Gumball pushed. Behind the door was a corridor lined with mirrors. Each mirror reflected him, Darwin, Nicole, but not Anais or Zoey....
