Chapter 1
Lila Meets the Lion’s Roar
Lila Mouse tiptoed through the tall grass, carrying a tiny red berry in her paws. The evening air smelled of warm earth and sweet flowers. Her little burrow was close, but the path passed near Lion’s den.
“Quiet feet,” Lila whispered. “Soft as falling leaves.”
She found a cozy place beneath a wide, flat stone. Grass curled around it like a green blanket. Lila tucked herself behind the stone and peeked toward the den. Lion rested nearby in the golden grass. His great mane looked soft in the sunset.
Lila waited for him to turn his head. Then she took one small step.
A loud roar rolled across the savanna.
The ground gave a tiny shake. Dust puffed from the dry earth. Lila’s berry bounced from her paws.
“Oh!” she squeaked.
She pressed herself against the stone. Her whiskers trembled. The stone felt cool against her back, and the grass tickled her nose.
Lion lifted his head. His ears pointed toward the stone.
“Who is there?” he asked.
Lila stayed still.
Lion stood and walked closer. His big paws made soft thumps in the dirt. Lila tried to hide behind a clump of grass, but her tail stuck out.
Lion saw it.
“A mouse,” he said.
Lila stepped out slowly. “Hello, Lion. I am only trying to get home.”
Lion looked at the tiny berry beside her. “You came close to my den.”
“I did not mean to bother you,” said Lila. “I thought the stone was a safe place.”
Lion sat down. His tail brushed the grass. “It is safe for now, but your path goes past my den.”
Lila looked toward her burrow. It seemed very far away. She tried to run through the grass, but the tall stems tangled around her feet. She stopped and pulled free.
Lion moved after her. He did not growl, but his steps were quick.
Lila darted left. Lion’s paw came down beside her, making a soft puff of dust. She darted right, then slipped under a fallen branch. The branch smelled of dry wood. Lion’s paw could not fit beneath it.
Lila crawled through and hurried on. Behind her, the grass swished.
“Wait!” Lion called.
Lila kept going until she reached the first stones near her burrow. She was safe inside, but she saw Lion’s large paw prints in the soft soil. They followed her path right to the entrance.
Lila held her berry close. She had reached home, but Lion now knew the way. She wondered what would happen when the sun rose.
