Chapter 1

The Boarding School Gate

Jed stood at the boarding school gate with one small bag in his hand and a fluttery feeling in his stomach.

The gate was painted blue. Beyond it, children hurried along bright corridors. Shoes tapped. Doors opened and closed. Somewhere, a bell rang like a tiny silver spoon.

Jed looked left. Then right. Every path seemed to twist like a ribbon.

He had nobody at home to show him how school worked. That was why children like Jed lived and learned here. The school gave them warm beds, shared meals, and teachers who remembered their names.

Still, the big place felt like a maze.

“Are you looking for your class?” asked a girl beside the notice board.

Jed nodded. “I think so.”

“I’m Rikki,” she said. She held two books against her chest. “I’m eight. You?”

“Jed. I’m eight too.”

Rikki smiled. One of her shoelaces had a bright yellow bead on it. Jed looked at the bead, then quickly looked away.

“Come on,” she said. “The first bell has rung.”

They walked down a corridor that smelled of toast and floor soap. Jed followed Rikki past a music room, a reading corner, and a row of hooks filled with coats.

“This way,” said Rikki.

They turned left. Then right. Then left again.

Jed stopped. “We passed that big plant already.”

The plant’s leaves waved when a warm puff of air came from the wall. It looked as if it knew the way and was keeping it secret.

Rikki checked the signs. “Oh. I took the long way.”

A teacher came from the next corridor. “Lost?”

“A little,” Jed said.

The teacher pointed to a yellow door. “Your classroom is there. Rikki, would you show Jed the class chart?”

Inside, the room buzzed with happy voices. A map covered one wall. Small jars of pencils stood on every table. Jed’s shoulders loosened.

Rikki placed a chart in front of him. “Tomorrow we’re going on a class trip.”

“To where?”

“The amusement park,” she whispered. “There will be rides, games, and food.”

Jed’s eyes grew wide.

The teacher clapped softly. “Everyone must stay with the group and listen carefully. We leave after breakfast.”

Rikki leaned close. “You can keep up with me.”

Jed smiled. He had found his classroom and a friendly guide. But tomorrow would bring a new path, and he would have to follow it with care.
