Secrets Of The Ember Grove

The scream cut through the Ember Grove just as Alainon reached the thorn-walk.

He stopped beneath the red-barked ash trees, one hand closing around the hilt of his sword. Kaela’s voice - strained, furious, alive - came again from somewhere beyond the twisting path.

“Alainon!”

He moved before the echo died.

The grove resisted him. Thorn branches whipped across his shoulders and caught at his cloak, though no wind stirred the leaves. Black vapor curled between the roots, thick as spilled ink, swallowing the lantern-glow from Valoria behind him. The air smelled of crushed emberleaf and iron.

“Kaela!” he called.

A shape burst through the brambles ahead. Not Kaela. A patient’s white sleeve flashed once before the darkness dragged the figure sideways. Alainon lunged, but his sword struck only a trunk. The tree shuddered beneath the blow, releasing a shower of glowing red needles.

Then he saw her.

Kaela stood in a clearing no larger than a wagon bed, one hand pressed against the chest of a fallen man. Pale green light poured from her fingers, knitting the torn flesh beneath his shirt. Around her, the shadows had formed a wall.

They moved like hands.

One reached for her throat.

Alainon crossed the clearing in three strides and cut through it. His blade, forged in the black fire of the Onyx Flame, split the darkness with a sound like wet silk tearing. The severed mass recoiled, but another tendril struck from behind.

Kaela turned too late.

He caught her around the waist and pulled her against him. The tendril slammed into his shoulder, driving him to one knee. Cold pierced his armor. For an instant, he could not breathe.

Kaela’s fingers gripped his forearm. “You’re bleeding.”

“Not enough to matter.”

“That is not your decision to make.”

Her voice was breathless, but her hand remained steady. Green light spilled over his shoulder. The cold withdrew, leaving a numb ache beneath the metal.

Alainon looked down at her. A strand of dark hair clung to her cheek. Her pupils were wide, reflecting the red glow of the trees. She was pressed against him so closely that he felt the quick flutter of her pulse through the thin fabric at her throat.

“You can heal me later,” he said.

“Then stop giving me more work.”

The corner of her mouth tightened. Not a smile. Something more dangerous - an effort not to show fear.

Behind them, the shadows struck the ground. Roots burst upward, twisting around the fallen patient’s legs.

Kaela pulled free of Alainon’s hold. “I have to get him out.”

“He can’t walk.”

“Then carry him.”

“Gladly. After I clear the path.”

He stepped between her and the dark wall. The blade in his hand began to glow, black at the center and silver around the edge. The Onyx Flame answered only to discipline; he forced his breathing slow, measured, while the grove pressed in from every side.

The attacker was not a body. Alainon could find no face, no limbs, no source. It occupied the grove itself, slipping through bark and root, turning every path into a snare.

Kaela crouched beside the wounded man. “His name is Joren. He was gathering emberleaf near the spring.”

“Can you move him?”

“I can keep him alive.”

“That wasn’t what I asked.”

She looked at him then, and the fear in her eyes sharpened into anger. “You think I don’t know the difference?”

A branch cracked overhead. Alainon raised his sword as a mass of black leaves plunged toward them. He cut once. The leaves burst into ash that stung his face.

“No,” he said. “I think you know it too well.”

For half a second, neither of them spoke.

Then the ground split.

A black root surged between them, striking Kaela’s shoulder and throwing her into the thorn hedge. Her cry ripped through him. Alainon seized the root with his free hand. Darkness crawled over his gauntlet, biting through the leather.

He dragged it aside with a shout and reached her as the hedge folded inward.

Kaela had one arm raised over her head. Thorns had torn her sleeve and scored her skin, but she was still trying to shield Joren.

“Leave him,” Alainon ordered.

“No.”

The word landed harder than any blow.

He caught her wrist. “Kaela, the grove is collapsing around us.”

“Then help me save him.”

“You cannot save everyone.”

“I am not asking you to save everyone.” Her gaze dropped to his hand around her wrist. “I’m asking you not to make me choose who deserves to live.”

The shadows surged at the edge of the clearing.

Alainon released her. He had spent years obeying orders that demanded sacrifice - one village for a province, one soldier for a battalion, one life to prevent a hundred deaths. He knew the arithmetic. He also knew the look of someone forced to carry it afterward.

He sheathed his sword and lifted Joren across his shoulders.

“Stay behind me,” he said.

Kaela rose, breathing hard. “You don’t give commands very well.”

“I give excellent commands.”

“You give commands as if everyone has already agreed.”

“Have you?”

“No.”

“Then we understand each other.”
