Chapter 1
Lily Finds Max Behind Bushes
pools—shy,
Lily smelled toast and warm sunlight as she stepped off the curb and spotted something small and still behind the hedge near Mrs. Kline’s bakery. The little dog pressed himself against the cool leaves, his fur tangled and his ears flattened. When he looked up, his eyes were like tiny pools—shy, hopeful, and a little scared.
"Hey there," Lily whispered. Her voice felt soft as the breeze. She crouched on the sidewalk, holding out the blue ribbon from her basket handle so he could sniff without being startled. The dog nosed the ribbon, then the tips of his whiskers brushed her palm. He was thinner than the puppies in the park and smelled like wet grass and old sidewalks. Lily smiled. "You look like you need a name." She thought of bright things and decided on Max.
She wrapped the ribbon loosely around Max’s neck like a gentle collar. He trembled a little when she scooped him up, but his body relaxed against her chest as if he liked the steady beat of her heart. At home Lily padded through the back door, keeping her shoes light so the floorboards wouldn't creak and wake her mother. Max's paws tapped quietly on the rug. Lily's house smelled of lemon cleaner and warm bread. She set Max on the soft scarf from the living-room basket. He curled into a tight ball and closed his eyes as if the scarf already tasted like bedtime.
That night, Lily lay down beside him. The house hummed with the refrigerator and distant traffic. Max's small breathing matched hers. She draped a sleeve over his back and felt proud and nervous all at once. When her mother opened the door, the lamp light made a stripe across the rug. "Lily?" Her voice was quiet, not angry—only surprised.
Lily blinked. "I found him behind the bushes, Mama. He looked lonely."
Her mother knelt, and Max opened one eye, then two, wagging the faintest tail. Her mother smelled soap and lavender from the scarf and smiled. "He's a baby," she said, reading Lily's face. "You did a brave thing bringing him inside. But we should tell your father and make sure he has a home for good."
Lily's cheeks warmed. She knew her mother meant well, and Lily loved Max already. When her parents talked softly in the kitchen about calls to the animal shelter, Lily watched Max breathe on the rug and felt the fear press in again—she didn't want him to leave.
After the lights went out, Lily slipped from her bed, careful not to wake anyone. She smoothed the scarf and picked up Max. He snuggled into her arms with the tiny trust of a creature who hoped things would stay safe. Outside the window, the town was a sleepy line of lamplights. Lily hugged him close and whispered, "I'll keep you safe, Max."
She tiptoed through the house, tucked him into her bicycle basket, and pedaled down familiar streets where the night smelled of bakery steam. The bushes by the park were quiet and dark. Lily set Max gently among the leaves where she had found him—safe, hidden, but near the place where she could visit.
Max pressed his nose into the ribbon and blinked up at her. Lily brushed his head and promised again, softly, as if promising to the moon. Then she walked home under the same sleepy lamplights, humming a little tune, knowing she would return tomorrow to check on him and, maybe, find a way to keep him with her for good.
