Chapter 1
Chapter 1
THE GIRL NOBODY PROTECTED
I used to think grown-ups knew how to keep children safe.
When you’re little, you don’t spend your days wondering whether the people around you might hurt you. You play. You laugh. You trust. You believe that the adults in your life know things you don’t, and that if anything bad ever happens, they’ll know what to do.
I believed that, too.
I was just a little girl. I didn’t understand how cruel people could be, how someone could look at a child and do something that would follow her for the rest of her life.
I didn’t know that a person could hurt you in a way you wouldn’t understand until years later.
I didn’t know that your body could grow up while a part of your heart remained trapped in a moment you desperately wished you could forget.
And I certainly didn’t know that one day, I would look back at that little girl and wonder why nobody had protected her.
I wish I could tell you that I remember every detail clearly. I can’t. What I do know is that I was molested as a child, and what happened to me was wrong.
I was too young to carry that kind of pain. Too young to understand why it happened. Too young to know that I wasn’t to blame.
But I was old enough to be affected by it.
And the world didn’t stop.
That is something I’ll never forget.
Whatever changed inside me, life outside me kept moving. People went about their days. The world carried on as if nothing had happened, while I was left trying to live with something I didn’t have the words to explain.
I couldn’t have told you then what that experience might mean for the woman I would eventually become.
I didn’t know how it would affect the way I saw myself, how I responded to pain, or how difficult it could become to trust the people I loved.
I only knew that something had happened to me that should never have happened.
And I had to keep growing up.
Nobody handed me instructions for how to do that while hurting.
So I did what I knew how to do. I kept living. I laughed when there were reasons to laugh. I went on with life because life expected me to.
But surviving an experience and understanding it are two different things.
For years, I carried feelings I couldn’t explain. Sometimes I was angry. Sometimes I was afraid. Sometimes the smallest things seemed to stir up emotions I couldn’t put into words.
I wondered what was wrong with me.
Why couldn’t I always explain what I felt? Why was trusting people so hard? Why did I sometimes feel like I had to fight to be heard, loved, or respected?
I didn’t realize how much of my life I would spend searching for answers.
I only knew that the little girl I had been was still somewhere inside me, carrying questions nobody had helped her answer.
And for a long time, I didn’t know how to reach her.
I would grow up, become a mother, fall in love, make mistakes, and experience heartbreak. I would learn things about people, relationships, and myself that I wished I’d understood sooner.
But the little girl was coming with me.
I just didn’t know it yet.
