Chapter 1
The Smallest Knock on the Door
The summer sun warmed the tops of the spruce trees, but Neely still felt a little cold as she walked toward the small house in Nunaka Valley.
People had been whispering about Summer Fields all morning.
“She is so tiny,” one neighbor had said.
“Doctors did not think she would make it through her first year,” another had murmured.
Neely slowed beside the white fence. Through the open window came the smell of cinnamon toast. A blue jay called from a branch above her. She pressed her fingers to the fence and listened.
A girl’s laugh floated from inside.
It was bright and clear, like a spoon tapping a glass.
Neely stepped onto the porch. She lifted her hand to knock, then lowered it. What if Summer was too tired? What if Neely said the wrong thing? Everyone spoke as if Summer were a little bird that might fly away if someone breathed too hard.
Neely tried a small knock.
Nothing happened.
She knocked again, a bit louder. Her knuckles made a soft, polite sound.
The door opened. Summer stood there. She was small enough that the doorknob looked almost as big as her hand. Her brown hair stuck up on one side.
“You knocked like a mouse,” Summer said.
Neely blinked. “I did?”
“A very careful mouse.” Summer grinned. “Come in before it eats the porch.”
Neely stepped inside. The room was warm, and sunlight lay across the wooden floor. Summer’s mother watched from the kitchen. Summer’s father set down a cup.
“Neely,” Summer said, “this is my best friend, even though we have just met.”
Neely smiled. “That seems fast.”
“I am small,” Summer said. “I do things quickly.”
Neely laughed. The tight feeling in her chest loosened.
Summer led her to a chair by the window. A red mitten sat on the floor. Neely picked it up and placed it on the table.
“Everyone talks about you,” Neely said.
Summer tilted her head. “Do they say I am a miracle?”
Neely nodded.
Summer shrugged. “I am also good at hopscotch and eating toast.”
Her mother’s smile faded a little. “The doctors still worry, sweetheart. They may be right that you will not have a long life.”
The room grew quiet. Neely looked at Summer’s tiny hands.
Summer reached for the toast and broke it in two. She gave one piece to Neely.
“Then we must use the time well,” she said.
Neely held the warm toast. “I can visit tomorrow.”
“Good,” Summer said. “Bring your best mouse knock.”
Outside, the blue jay called again. Neely left with crumbs on her fingers and a promise in her heart: she would keep visiting Summer Fields.
