Chapter 1

The Picnic Basket on the Hill

Tommy the Turtle tapped his little feet on the warm path. The picnic basket sat beside him, tied with a bright blue ribbon.

“Ready?” called his friend from the sunny grass.

“Ready!” said Tommy.

The basket smelled like sweet apples and fresh bread. Tommy smiled. Today, they would carry it up the winding hill to the green meadow.

Tommy held one handle. His friend held the other. Up they went.

At first, the path was easy. Birds sang in the trees. Tiny flowers nodded in the breeze. Then the hill grew steep.

The basket slid backward.

“Oh!” cried Tommy, stepping back with it.

His friend pulled forward. “I have it!”

But the basket slid again. Scritch, scritch, scritch went its bottom on the dusty path.

Tommy looked at the hill. It curled left, then right, like a giant sleeping snake. He felt small beside it.

“Maybe I am too slow,” he said softly.

His friend shook their head. “Slow can be steady.”

They tried pulling the basket together. It moved a little, then slipped back with a soft bump.

Tommy thought for a moment. “Let us stop and take small steps.”

So they did. Tommy planted his feet. His friend held the ribbon. Together, they lifted the basket over a round stone.

“One step,” said Tommy.

“Then another,” said his friend.

Step by step, they climbed. When the path turned, they turned too. When the basket leaned, they held it close. The wind brushed Tommy’s shell, and the smell of pine trees filled the air.

At last, the path became flat. Tommy blinked at the bright meadow below. The grass waved like a soft green blanket.

“We made it!” he cheered.

Tommy and his friend set the basket down. They were proud. The bread was safe, and the apples were still inside.

Then the blue ribbon tugged.

Snip!

It had caught on a low branch. The knot came loose, and the ribbon dangled from the basket.

Tommy gently picked it up. “We reached the top,” he said, “but we still need to fix this.”

His friend smiled. “We can fix it together.”

They carried the basket into the warm meadow, ready for their picnic and their next small task.
