Wedding Reunion Hearts

Mara Kendall had one job: cross the courtyard, greet the wedding party, and make it to her cousin’s welcome toast without letting Owen Whitaker pull her seventeen years backward.

She tightened her fingers around the strap of her overnight bag and stepped from the taxi into a rush of warm air, gardenia, and car exhaust. Beyond the stone archway, white lanterns swung above the courtyard, their glass chiming softly whenever the wind moved through. Guests clustered beneath them in bright dresses and linen suits, calling greetings across the fountain, laughing too loudly from the relief of arriving.

A quiet, distance-filled day had seemed possible when Mara left home.

Then she saw him.

Owen stood beside the entrance table with one hand braced against a stack of welcome boxes, listening to the bride’s mother give rapid instructions. He wore a dark blue suit without a tie, the top button of his shirt open. His hair was shorter than she remembered, though one unruly lock still fell toward his forehead as if it had refused every adult decision made about it.

He turned.

The years between them did not disappear. They sharpened.

Mara stopped so abruptly that the taxi driver leaned out of his window.

“Miss? Your bag.”

“Right.” She reached for it, missed the handle, and caught it on the second try.

Owen’s gaze dropped to her hand. He had always noticed when she was nervous. At sixteen, he could tell from the way she twisted her bracelet. At twenty-nine, apparently, he could tell from a badly handled overnight bag.

His mouth curved - not quite a smile.

“Mara.”

Her name in his voice was familiar enough to hurt and careful enough to make it worse.

She walked toward the archway. “Owen.”

The bride’s mother glanced between them. “Oh, you two know each other?”

“We grew up together,” Mara said.

“Next door,” Owen added.

For one suspended second, the courtyard seemed to narrow around that fact. Next door. The house with the green shutters. The fence they had climbed instead of using the gate. The narrow strip of grass where he had kissed her for the first time and then apologized because she had gone silent.

Mara shifted her bag higher on her shoulder. “A long time ago.”

“Not that long,” he said.

Her eyes went to his. “Long enough.”

A bell sounded from somewhere inside the venue, and the wedding party moved at once. The bride, Elise, appeared beneath the arch in a flutter of pale blue silk, her cheeks already flushed with excitement.

“There you are!” Elise called. “Mara, you made it.”

Mara turned toward her cousin with grateful speed, but Elise caught both her hands before she could escape.

“You’re staying near me during the welcome, aren’t you? I need someone sensible.”

“I can be sensible.”

Owen gave a quiet cough.

Mara looked at him. “Something to add?”

“Nothing at all.”

“That’s a first.”

The words came out before she could soften them. His expression changed - not much, only a slight settling around the eyes - but she felt the strike land.

Elise, mercifully unaware or pretending to be, looped an arm through Mara’s. “Good. Then you can help me keep everyone organized. Owen, take the older relatives toward the terrace, would you?”

“Of course.”

Mara’s stomach dipped.

Of course. He said it easily, as if being given a role in this wedding - this intimate gathering of people who loved Elise and knew one another’s histories - was natural. As if he had not spent years elsewhere, becoming a man she knew only through occasional mentions and photographs she never allowed herself to linger over.

Elise squeezed her arm. “You remember Owen, don’t you?”

Mara kept her smile in place. “I remember.”

Owen lifted one of the welcome boxes and offered it to her. “Here.”

Their fingers touched beneath the cardboard.

The contact was brief. It still traveled through her like heat under a door.

Mara took the box. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

They were both too polite. The old version of them would have mocked the words, repeated them in ridiculous voices, turned the moment into a private joke. This version stood beneath white lanterns while a fountain murmured nearby, pretending that courtesy could hold the past at a safe distance.

Elise was called away by the photographer. Guests began flowing through the archway, forcing Mara and Owen closer to the stone wall. A little boy in suspenders darted between them, nearly colliding with Mara’s knees. Owen caught the child gently by the shoulders and steered him toward his parents.

“Still rescuing people from traffic,” Mara said.

“Still noticing?”

She looked at him.

His hand remained on the boy’s shoulder until the child was safely gone. That small, patient gesture was exactly the kind she remembered: Owen tying a loose shoelace for her before she tripped, Owen waiting outside the principal’s office when she had been too proud to admit she was scared, Owen carrying her bicycle home after she broke the chain.
