Chapter 1

Charley Escapes the Fishing Boat

Charley swam through the bay of Newfoundland, keeping close to the smooth stones below. Cold water brushed his silver sides. Sea grass tickled his fins, and the salty smell of the bay filled his gills.

“Almost home,” he whispered.

Home was a small hollow beneath a shelf of rock. It was warm inside, lined with soft seaweed, and tucked away from the strongest waves. Charley liked to rest there after a long swim. He liked knowing that his cod friends were nearby too.

But the bay had changed. Once, many cod had filled the water. Now only a few remained. Boats came often, and their nets swept through the bay. The fish had learned to swim quietly and stay low.

Charley turned past a tall rock. A deep rumble rolled through the water.

He stopped.

Above him floated a large fishing boat. Its engine buzzed like a giant bee. Ropes dipped into the sea, and a wide net hung from the side.

Charley looked left. He looked right. The open water around him suddenly seemed very wide.

“I only need to pass beneath it,” he told himself.

He lowered his body and swam toward home. The boat groaned as it moved. Water pushed against Charley’s fins. He tried to slip under the ropes, but one rope swung down in front of him.

Charley turned quickly.

A net dropped behind him.

He darted forward, but the net moved faster. Its soft threads curled around his tail and lifted him through the shining water.

“Help!” Charley cried, though the boat’s engine swallowed his voice.

Up he went.

The sea fell away beneath him. Sunlight flashed on the waves. Then Charley landed on the wet deck with a small flop.

The deck smelled of salt, rope, and fish. Water ran beneath him in little streams. He wiggled his tail and tried to slide toward the edge, but the boards were rough and dry.

A fisherman stepped closer. His boots made heavy thumps.

“Look at this one,” the fisherman said.

Charley’s fins pressed against the deck. He could not understand every word, but he understood the hands reaching toward him.

He twisted away.

The fisherman lifted him carefully, but not gently enough. Charley’s tail slipped through the man’s fingers. For one tiny moment, Charley hung above the deck.

He saw the sea below.

He saw the rope.

He saw a narrow space between the boat’s side and the water.

Charley kicked with all his strength.

Flop!

He slipped free of the fisherman’s hands and landed on the edge of the deck. His body slid over the wet boards. He pushed with his fins again.

Flop!

This time he fell into the sea.

Cool water wrapped around him. Charley sank, then swam hard toward the shadow beneath the boat. The engine rumbled above, but the water below was calm. He tucked himself beside a thick rope and waited.

The fisherman leaned over the side.

“Where did that cod go?” he called.

Charley stayed still. A tiny crab crawled across a stone beside him. Charley did not move even his eyes.

After a while, the boat turned away. Its engine grew softer and softer until it sounded like a far-off hum.

Charley waited one more moment. Then he swam out from the boat’s shadow.

He was free.

He turned toward home, but the bay no longer felt like the safe place he knew. The fishing boat had crossed his path, and other boats waited farther out. Nets floated near the surface. Ropes curled in the water like long brown sea plants.

Charley took a slow breath through his gills.

“I am not hurt,” he said. “I can still swim.”

He checked his tail. It moved. He checked his fins. They moved too. Not even a scratch marked his silver scales.

That made him smile.

Then he looked beyond the bay.

To reach home, Charley had to cross a wide stretch of open sea. The water there was bright and deep. No rock shelf waited nearby. No seaweed hollow covered him. Waves rolled across the surface, and the wind pushed them toward the shore.

Home was behind him, but the open sea was ahead.

Charley thought of the small hollow beneath the rock. He thought of the soft seaweed inside. He imagined resting there, safe and warm.

Then he heard a distant engine.

Another boat was coming into the bay.

Charley swam forward.

He kept low, passing between stones and waving grass. When a rope drifted down, he waited for it to rise. When a net moved across the water, he slipped beneath it. Each time, he watched carefully before moving again.

A school of small fish hurried past him.

“Come with us!” one of them called.

“Where are you going?” Charley asked.

“Behind the rocks!”

Charley followed them for a short distance. The rocks gave him cover, but they did not lead toward home.

“I must keep going,” he said.

The small fish nodded. “Swim safely!”

“You too,” Charley replied.

At last, Charley reached the edge of the bay. The water changed there. It grew colder and deeper. Waves lifted him and lowered him again. He could no longer see the bottom.

He paused.

The sea smelled fresh and wild. Foam brushed his mouth. Far away, a seabird cried above the water.

Charley wanted to turn back. Behind him were the rocks, the sea grass, and the path he knew. Ahead was the open sea, where he would have to find a new way home.

A wave rolled beneath him.

Charley let it lift him.

“I escaped the boat,” he said. “I can cross this water too.”

He swam into the open sea.

For a while, the waves carried him gently. Charley moved with them instead of fighting them. Up he went, then down. Up, then down. His fins found a steady rhythm.

Soon, the bay grew small behind him.

Charley looked back one last time. The fishing boat was only a dark shape in the distance. The rocks looked like tiny gray pebbles. His home was hidden somewhere beyond them.

He felt lonely, but he was alive. He was free. He had saved himself.

Then something large moved beneath the bright water ahead.

Charley stopped swimming.

A long shadow passed under him and vanished into the blue. The water trembled with a deep, rolling sound.

Charley turned toward a patch of floating kelp. He tucked himself beneath its wide green leaves and watched the open sea.

The kelp smelled sharp and salty. Its soft leaves brushed his back. For a moment, it gave him a little shelter.

He peeked out.

The water looked calm again.

Charley waited until the ripples faded. Then he swam on, keeping his eyes open and his fins ready.

He had wanted only to reach home safely. Instead, he had escaped the boat and entered a much bigger world.

Still, Charley did not give up. He followed the gentle pull of the waves, carrying his courage with him.

And although the open sea was wide, Charley was not helpless anymore. He knew he could think, wait, and move when the right moment came.
