Chapter 1

Bella’s Breezy Forest Path

Bella tied her bright red scarf and hopped out of her cozy home. The morning air smelled like pine trees. Sunlight made little gold spots on the path.

“Good morning, forest!” Bella called. She loved saying hello to her friends. Her soft white fur tickled in the cool breeze as she hopped along Bella’s forest path.

“Good morning, Bella!” called Pip from beneath an oak tree.

Pip was a squirrel with a little basket. He was collecting acorns for his family to eat in winter.

“One, two, three,” Pip counted. “I have enough for today!”

Bella smiled and hopped closer. Then the wind began to blow.

Whoosh!

Leaves danced across the path. Bella’s scarf fluttered behind her like a red flag. She held it with one paw and took a small hop.

“Whee!” she said. “The wind is very busy today!”

Another gust rushed past.

Whoosh!

Pip’s basket tipped over. Acorns rolled down the path like tiny brown balls.

“Oh dear!” said Pip. “My acorns!”

Bella hurried after them. One rolled beside a tree root. Another stopped near a soft patch of moss. Bella gently nudged them back toward Pip’s basket.

“Here is one,” she said.

“Thank you, Bella,” said Pip.

They looked around for the last acorn. Bella lifted a curled leaf. Nothing was there. Pip peeked under a fern. Nothing.

The wind grew quiet, but the leaves still covered the ground. Bella listened. She heard a tiny tap beneath them.

“Maybe it is hiding,” she said.

Pip’s tail drooped. “I need it for my family.”

Bella moved close beside him. “We will look together.”

She searched near the tree roots. Pip searched beside the moss. They checked under a yellow leaf and behind a little stone.

But the acorn stayed hidden.

Bella felt cheerful no longer. She felt worried for Pip. Still, she tucked her scarf safely around her neck and stood tall.

“We will find it,” she said kindly.

Pip nodded. Together, they reached the place where the sound had come from. A small pile of leaves rested there, warm and soft.

Bella and Pip looked at the leaves.

The acorn was still missing beneath them. Bella was ready to help.
