The Big Idea

Using a, an, and the helps us sound clear when we talk about things. “a” and “an” are used when we mean one thing, not a specific one. “the” is used when we mean a specific thing that we both know.

We say an before words that start with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u). For example, an apple (starts with a vowel sound “a”). We say a before most other sounds, like a toy or a dog.

Fun fact: If a word starts with a vowel letter but sounds like a consonant (like “u” in “university”), we still use a.

Your Turn (Write): Fill in the blanks:

Words to sort: a kite, an ice cream, the kite, the ice cream.

\*Tip: If you can point to it (the one), use the.

Where Do We See This?

At home, you might say, “Give me a spoon,” when you want any spoon. But if you mean the spoon in the drawer, you say, “Give me the spoon.”

At school, you can hear it in everyday talk: “I need an eraser” (any eraser). “I lost the eraser I used yesterday” (a specific eraser).

On the playground, you might say, “Let’s play with a ball,” but later, “Pass me the ball with the green stripe.” That’s how the becomes “the exact one.”

Your Turn (Draw & Label): Draw two small pictures:

• Picture 1: a snack (any snack)
• Picture 2: the snack (a snack you are pointing to in your drawing)

Write one sentence under each picture.

Think About It!

1) Circle: Is this “any one” or “that specific one”?

Circle a or the and tell a grown-up your reason in one word: “any” or “specific.”

2) Draw: Draw a fruit and write either a or an before it.

3) Talk: With a grown-up, say two sentences:

• One with the (a specific one)

Fun Challenge: Look around your room and find 3 things. For each thing, write one sentence: one using a/an and one using the (like: “I have a pen.” / “I have the pen on my desk.”). What will you write first?
