Chapter 1
The Map Beneath the Ice
Maya pulled her hood tight as the Antarctic wind turned the world white.
Snow brushed her goggles and ticked against her coat. The research hut had been close a moment ago, a small red box beside three tall poles. Now it was gone.
“Keep the map flat!” called Dr. Lena from behind her.
Maya held the old map under her coat. A blue line curled across it like a sleeping snake. The line led to the hut. Tiny marks showed ice bumps, snow stakes, and a wide blue crack called a crevasse.
“We can walk straight,” Maya said.
“Not here,” said Lena. “The snow can hide a crevasse.”
Maya took one careful step. Her boot met a hard ridge. She stopped. A long, thin dip ran across the snow ahead. It looked like a line drawn by a giant pencil.
The direct path was blocked.
Maya tried turning left. The wind pushed snow over her tracks. She could not see the poles. She tried turning right, but the map flapped and folded like a restless bird.
“I can’t tell where we are,” she said.
Lena placed a warm mitten on Maya’s shoulder. “Then we look for clues together.”
Maya studied the map. Near the blue line were three small stars. She looked across the white plain. One snow stake stood ahead. Another peeked from a drift. A third was hidden.
“Three stars,” Maya whispered. “Three stakes.”
They moved slowly from stake to stake. Maya planted a spare pole beside each one. The poles made a bright trail behind them. The ice creaked softly under their boots, but the stakes showed the safe ridge.
At the last stake, Maya found a folded corner on the map. Beneath it was a row of tiny pictures: white ice, green forest, brown mountain, and yellow sand.
“These are more places,” she said.
“Different biomes,” Lena replied. “The map is linking them.”
The wind began to soften. Ahead, a red wall appeared through the snow. Maya smiled and followed the final stake to the hut door.
Inside, warm air hugged her cheeks. Lena made cocoa, and Maya spread the map beside the little heater. A fresh blue line led from the hut toward a distant coastal signal station.
“We reached shelter,” Maya said, “but the map goes farther.”
Lena looked at the long white journey ahead. “Then we will follow it one safe clue at a time.”
Maya sipped her cocoa. Outside, the snow settled over the ice, while the map waited for morning. In wild places, careful eyes and kind teamwork can turn a hidden path into a safe way forward.
