Long Huge Love Story

Mara Ellison reached the Greyhaven docks with one hand clamped around her suitcase handle and the other pressed to the folded letter inside her coat.

“Hold the ferry!”

Her voice vanished beneath the harbor wind.

Rain blew sideways across the planks, needling her cheeks and turning the dock lamps into blurred yellow halos. Ahead, the night ferry’s loading ramp shuddered beneath a crowd of passengers. A deckhand was already pulling the chain across the entrance.

Mara dragged her suitcase over a gap in the boards. One wheel caught. The case tipped, spilling a pair of shoes and a silk blouse into a puddle.

“Damn it.”

She dropped to her knees, gathering everything with numb fingers. The letter remained against her ribs, its edges sharp through the lining of her coat. She had come to Greyhaven for one reason: to board the last ferry north before anyone could stop her. If she missed it, she would have to face the people waiting at the station - the men who had delivered the legal notice to her apartment, the men who knew her name before she had given it.

The ferry horn sounded once, deep enough to tremble through the dock.

Mara shoved the blouse into her suitcase and lurched upright. The chain was halfway across the entrance.

“Wait!” she called.

A man stepped into her path.

He was tall, dark-haired, and dry despite the rain, as if the weather had negotiated with him and lost. His black coat was open at the throat, revealing a white shirt already damp at the collar. One gloved hand rested on the chain.

“You’re not boarding,” he said.

Mara stared at him. “I’m sorry?”

“You heard me.”

“I have a ticket.”

“Then you should have arrived before the final boarding call.”

She glanced past him. “The ramp is still open.”

“Not for you.”

The certainty in his voice struck harder than the wind. Behind him, passengers complained and pressed forward. A child began to cry. Somewhere near the ferry office, a metal cart toppled with a crash.

Mara gripped her suitcase. “Move.”

His gaze dropped to the case, then returned to her face. His eyes were an unusual gray, pale and watchful beneath wet black hair.

“That depends,” he said. “Are you Mara Ellison?”

The dock seemed to tilt.

She had not told anyone her name. She had not written it on the ticket. The letter in her coat suddenly felt hot.

“Who wants to know?”

His expression changed - not surprise, exactly, but recognition settling into place.

“Lucian Hart.”

The name carried weight even through the noise. Mara had heard it in the offices where she used to work, spoken with lowered voices and careful contempt. Hart & Co. owned shipping routes, warehouses, half the northern shore. Lucian Hart was supposed to be ruthless, private, and impossible to corner.

He looked nothing like the caricature she had built from gossip. That was the trouble. He looked like a man who noticed when someone was frightened.

“I don’t know you,” she said.

“No. But you’re carrying documents that belong to my firm.”

Rain slipped from his hair to his cheek. He did not wipe it away.

Mara’s fingers tightened around the suitcase handle. “You’ve mistaken me for someone else.”

“Have I?”

A deckhand shouted, “Last passengers! Clear the ramp!”

Lucian turned his head. “Lower it.”

The deckhand hesitated. “Mr. Hart, the manifest is closed.”

“Then reopen it.”

A murmur moved through the crowd. Mara felt every face turn toward them. She hated him for making her visible. She hated herself for noticing the clean line of his mouth when he was angry.

“You can’t simply order them to let me on,” she said.

“I can.”

“That doesn’t mean you should.”

“No,” he said quietly. “It means I have to decide whether you’re running from trouble or toward it.”

The ferry bell rang again. A gust tore the ticket from Mara’s hand. It skittered toward the edge of the dock.

Lucian caught it before it disappeared between the boards.

He held it out. His glove brushed her fingers when she took it.

The contact was brief, but it moved through her with an intimacy she had no right to feel. His hand was warm. Hers was shaking.

His eyes noticed.

Mara pulled back. “I’m not running from anything.”

“Your hands disagree.”

“They’re cold.”

“Your coat is buttoned.”

She wanted to slap him. Instead, she seized her suitcase and pushed past.

The chain caught her across the waist.

Pain flashed through her ribs. The suitcase struck the boards, and the letter inside her coat slipped free, falling near Lucian’s polished boots.

He bent first.

Mara reached for it at the same time. Their hands met over the damp paper.

For one suspended second, neither moved.

Then Lucian looked at the seal.

It was broken, but the name printed across the top remained visible: Mara Ellison.

His gaze sharpened.

“Where did you get this?”

“Give it back.”

“You understand what this is?”

“I understand that it’s mine.”

“It’s a summons.”

The word cut through the harbor noise.

Mara snatched the letter from him and shoved it against her chest....
