Chapter 1

A Star in the Garden

Maya was tucking her stuffed rabbit beneath the blanket when a soft green glow flickered outside her window.

She sat up. The room smelled of lavender soap, and the curtains made a quiet swish in the warm night air. Beyond the glass, something bright bobbed above the garden.

“Was that a star?” Maya whispered.

The glow dipped behind the tall sunflowers. A tiny silver streak slipped down with it. Maya hurried to the window and pressed her nose to the cool glass.

The light blinked once.

Then twice.

Maya pulled on her slippers and crept downstairs. She took her little flashlight, though the moon shone like a round lamp over the garden. Her mother was reading in the next room, so Maya called softly, “I’m just looking outside.”

“Stay where I can hear you,” her mother answered.

“I will.”

Maya opened the back door. The grass felt damp beneath her slippers. Mint leaves brushed her ankles, and somewhere near the fence, a cricket chirped.

The glowing object had landed beside the pumpkin patch. It was no bigger than Maya’s toy wagon. It had three round windows and a little silver door. Green lights blinked along its sides.

Maya stepped closer.

The tall plants made a twisty path. Tomato vines curled across the stones, and the sunflowers nodded in the breeze. Each time Maya lifted her flashlight, the ship’s lights sputtered.

“Oh, dear,” she said. “Are you lost?”

A small sound came from inside. It was like a spoon tapping a teacup.

Maya tried the silver door. It did not move. She tried again, gently.

The door popped open.

A tiny creature peeked out. It had blue skin, bright eyes, and two soft ears shaped like leaves. A yellow scarf was wrapped around its neck.

“Hello,” Maya said. “I’m Maya.”

The creature touched its chest. “Pip.”

“Hello, Pip.”

Pip pointed at the blinking lights. His smile faded. Then he made a wobbly circle in the air and pointed up at the sky.

Maya looked at the ship. One light went dark.

“You can’t find your way home,” she guessed.

Pip nodded.

Maya felt a small pinch in her chest. She knew what it was like to feel lost, even in a grocery store.

“We’ll think of something,” she promised.

She held up her flashlight, but Pip shook his head. The ship blinked again, weaker than before.

Maya reached for Pip’s tiny hand. It was warm, like a button warmed in sunlight.

“Come on,” she said. “We can look at the stars together.”

Pip stepped into the moonlit garden beside her. His ship gave one faint, friendly blink behind them, and Maya knew their quiet bedtime adventure had begun.
