SETTING

Bellweather, a small town where the sun vanishes without warning.

THE RULE

Never answer a voice calling your name from somewhere you cannot see.

Prologue — The Last Sunrise

At 7:13 a.m., the sun disappeared.

Not behind clouds. Not behind an eclipse. It simply went out.

Across the town of Bellweather, birds dropped from the sky in confusion. Traffic lights flickered. Every digital clock stopped at exactly 7:13. For eleven seconds, the entire world became darker than midnight.

Then the screaming began.

Grim was the first to notice the man standing across the street.

He was impossibly tall, his head nearly touching the second-story windows of the houses behind him. His arms hung past his knees. His gray skin stretched tightly over a body that looked as if someone had tried to build a human from memory.

He wore a school uniform.

Grim blinked.

The thing was closer.

"Andy?" Grim whispered into his phone. "You seeing this?"

Static crackled.

Then Andy answered, his voice shaking.

"Grim. Get inside your house."

"Why?"

"Because there's something standing outside mine."

A pause.

"And it looks exactly like me."

Grim looked back across the street.

The tall figure slowly tilted its head.

Its face had no eyes, only two shallow dents where eyes should have been. Its mouth was a thin, perfectly straight line.

Then the mouth opened.

Not downwards.

Sideways.

A wet, cracking smile stretched from one ear to the other.

From somewhere behind Grim, a familiar voice whispered:

"Don't look at it."

It was his own voice.

And it was coming from inside his house.

Grim ran.

He sprinted across the front lawn, stumbled over the porch steps, and threw himself through the front door. He slammed it shut and locked every bolt.

Something knocked from the other side.

Three slow knocks.

Then his mother's voice spoke.

"Grimmy? Honey? Let me in."

Grim stopped breathing.

His mother had been dead for six years.

The knocking started again.

"Grimmy," the voice pleaded. "It's so dark out here."

He backed away from the door.

A shadow stretched beneath it.

Two long feet appeared on the other side, pointing in opposite directions.

Then the voice changed.

It became Grim's own.

"Open the door."

The lights went out.

And from somewhere upstairs, something began running toward him.

Not walking.

Running.

On all fours.
