Chapter 1
Fleeing the Overlord’s Black Dunes
Readread forread forread for meread for me theread for me the highlighted. Kara Voss wanted Jalen’s hand.
Not the pulse-rifle strapped across his back, not the stolen navigation slate tucked beneath his coat. His hand. Something warm and certain to hold while the black dunes shifted beneath their boots and the Overlord’s searchlights combed the wasteland behind them.
“Don’t slow down,” Jalen whispered.
“I’m not.”
“You are.”
“Then stop watching me.”
His mouth tightened, but he reached for her anyway.
Their gloves met between them. His fingers closed around hers for three strides before a tremor passed through the ground. The dune ahead collapsed with a roar, spilling slabs of dark stone into the corridor. Jalen yanked Kara sideways as the earth opened where she had been running.
They struck the ground together. Dust filled her mouth. Its taste was metallic, bitter as old blood.
Above them, a searchlight swept across the ridge.
Kara pressed her cheek to the hot rock. Jalen landed half over her, one arm braced beside her head. His breath touched her ear, quick and uneven.
“Still not slowing down?” he murmured.
She could feel the strength in his arm, the heat of him through two layers of clothing. For one reckless second, the patrols, the Overlord, the ruined planet beneath them - all of it fell away.
Then the light passed over the ridge.
Kara shoved at his shoulder. “Move.”
He rolled clear, and the moment broke hard enough to hurt.
They crawled into a narrow split between two stones. The planet’s night pressed close, black and wind-scoured. Far behind them, engines growled through the dunes. The Overlord’s patrols did not need roads. They had carved corridors into the wasteland with heat cannons, leaving the rock glassy and the sand packed into ridges sharp enough to cut skin.
Jalen pulled a strip of cloth from his pocket and wrapped it around Kara’s palm. She had not noticed the blood.
“You’re hurt,” he said.
“It’s a scratch.”
“It’s bleeding.”
“So is your mouth.”
He touched his lower lip. His glove came away dark. “You always did like seeing me suffer.”
“Only when you make it difficult.”
His eyes found hers in the thin red glow of the patrol light. There had been a time when teasing him was easy. Before every joke carried the weight of what they could not say. Before she began noticing how his gaze lingered when he thought she was asleep, or how carefully he avoided touching her when he wanted to.
Jalen tightened the knot around her palm. “The escape route is two kilometers east.”
“If the map is real.”
“It came from a courier who survived the eastern mines.”
“People survive mines long enough to lie.”
“Kara.”
“What?” She kept her voice low, but anger sharpened it. “You stole a route from a dead man and expect me to trust it because you like the shape of the lines?”
“I expect you to trust me.”
The words entered the cramped space between them and stayed there.
Jalen had always been the one person she trusted. He had pulled her from a ration queue when her father disappeared. He had taught her which rocks held heat after sundown and which ones crumbled under a boot. He had slept beside her through dust storms, shoulder against shoulder, never asking for more.
Trusting him had once been as natural as breathing.
Now she pictured the Overlord’s black insignia burned into the patrol machines and wondered how far its reach extended. The soldiers called the Overlord all-seeing. The prisoners called him the Last Hand. Every living creature on Obsidian knew the stories: villages emptied, breeding nests destroyed, gardens poisoned because the Overlord wanted the planet silent.
Jalen lifted his chin toward the ridge. “We either move now or wait for them to find us.”
Kara looked at his mouth. “You always make the worst choices sound reasonable.”
“Come with me and complain later.”
He offered his hand again.
This time she took it.
They ran east.
The corridor narrowed between black dunes rising on either side like frozen waves. Wind drove grains of volcanic sand against Kara’s face. Searchlights slid over the crests, vanished, then returned from another angle. The patrols were not sweeping randomly. They were herding them.
Kara realized it at the same moment Jalen did.
“They know where we’re going,” she said.
“No.”
“They’re closing the western cut.”
“Keep moving.”
“Jalen - ”
A pulse struck the dune behind them. Stone burst apart. Heat washed over Kara’s back, and Jalen threw himself into her, driving them beneath a low shelf of rock. Shards rattled over the stone.
The patrol had fired without warning.
Kara’s breath caught beneath him. His body covered hers, heavy and alive. His face was inches away. Dust clung to his lashes.
“Are you hurt?” he asked.
“No.”
“Look at me.”
“I’m looking.”
“Not at the rifle.”
Her gaze had fallen to the weapon on his back. The pulse rifle was stamped with the Overlord’s mark.
Jalen saw it. Something closed behind his eyes.
“I took it from a patrol,” he said.
“I know.”
“You’re staring at it like it’s mine.”
“Isn’t it?”
His jaw flexed. “It’s a weapon.”
“It’s his weapon.”
“It keeps us alive.”
“Until it tells them where we are.”
He reached for the rifle, but another pulse struck the rocks. The shelf shuddered. Kara grabbed his coat as the ground slanted beneath them.
“East,” he said. “Now.”
They burst from cover.
The dunes had become a maze of broken shelves and sudden drops. Kara followed Jalen over a ridge, then slid down a slope of black shale. Her boots lost purchase. She fell hard, and his hand caught the back of her harness.
For one breath, she hung above a ravine.
Below, the rock glowed dull orange in its depths.
Jalen hauled her up with a raw sound that seemed torn from his chest. She landed against him, both arms around his neck. His hands locked at her waist.
Neither of them moved.
His face was flushed from exertion. A line of sweat ran from his temple to his jaw, carrying dust with it. Kara felt the frantic beat of his heart through his coat.
“You could have let me fall,” she whispered.
“Don’t say that.”
“You could have.”
“I won’t.”
The answer was immediate. Fierce. It struck deeper than it should have.
His fingers spread against her waist. He looked down at her mouth, then back to her eyes, asking without speaking.
Kara wanted to close the distance. She wanted to press her lips to the cut on his mouth and taste the blood there. She wanted him to stop being careful.
Behind them, engines screamed.
She stepped away.
Jalen’s hands dropped.
“Keep going,” she said.
The eastern route appeared as a thin blue mark on the navigation slate. It led toward a curved wall of stone where the dunes folded over themselves. Rumor called the passage a forgotten maintenance shaft. Beyond it lay tunnels leading beneath the patrol grid - and, if the old maps could be believed, a way beyond the Overlord’s territory.
Kara reached the wall first. She brushed sand from a seam and found a metal door buried in the rock.
Jalen keyed the slate against its panel.
Nothing happened.
He tried again.
The door remained dark.
“Your courier’s map,” Kara said.
“Give me a second.”
“We don’t have one.”
He struck the panel with his palm. “I said give me a second.”
The sound carried across the dunes.
Kara turned. Searchlights ignited along the ridge.
Not one. Six.
The machines rose from the sand without engines or warning, their black bodies unfolding like insects. Red targeting beams crawled over the rocks and settled on Kara’s chest.
Jalen stepped in front of her.
“Down!” he shouted.
Pulse fire tore through the corridor.
They ran along the wall as stones exploded around them. Jalen fired the stolen rifle, each burst flashing white against the dark. One patrol unit toppled, but two more advanced. The rifle screamed in his hands, overheating.
“Kara!” he yelled. “The door!”
She slammed the slate against the panel again. A symbol appeared: a white circle split by a jagged line.
Not an access mark.
A warning.
The door opened beneath her hand.
Beyond it, a shaft dropped into darkness. Cold air rushed up carrying the smell of water and something green.
A living smell.
“The route’s real!” she cried.
Jalen staggered toward her, the rifle smoking. A beam struck his shoulder. He spun and hit the wall.
Kara caught him. “Jalen!”
“I’m fine.”
“You’re burning.”
“Get inside.”
Another patrol unit emerged above the ridge. Its weapon unfolded with a mechanical click.
Kara dragged Jalen toward the opening, but he pulled against her.
The shaft had two entrances. One narrow ladder descended along the wall. The other was a horizontal service tunnel, half-collapsed and leading deeper beneath the dunes.
The patrols were already spreading around them.
Jalen looked at the tunnel, then at the ladder. “You take the lower shaft.”
“No.”
“The service tunnel is wider. I can draw them away.”
“No.”
“Kara, listen to me.”
“I said no.”
His face changed. Not anger. Fear.
It was the first time she had seen it without disguise.
“If we stay together,” he said, “they take us both.”
“Then we fight.”
“We can’t fight an army in a hole.”
“You’re not leaving me.”
“I’m not leaving you.” He gripped her shoulders. “I’m giving you a chance to reach the routes.”
“You don’t get to decide which one of us survives.”
His eyes shone in the dim light. “You think I’m trying to survive?”
The question silenced her.
Behind them, the patrols advanced. The corridor filled with the smell of scorched stone.
Jalen leaned closer, his forehead nearly touching hers. “I stole that rifle because the courier wasn’t dead when I found him. He gave me the map. He told me the Overlord knew about the eastern routes.”
Kara’s stomach turned cold. “You knew?”
“I knew he might.”
“You brought me into a trap.”
“I brought you to the only door he hasn’t sealed.”
“You should have told me.”
“You would have stayed behind.”
“Yes.”
“That’s why I didn’t.”
The betrayal cut cleanly through the noise.
Kara struck his chest with both hands. “You don’t get to protect me by lying.”
“I know.”
“You don’t get to choose my risk.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you still standing there?”
His expression broke open. Beneath the dust and blood, he looked young enough to be the boy who had once shared half a ration with her under a collapsed bridge. But his voice was steady when he answered.
“Because I love you.”
The patrols fired.
Jalen shoved her down the ladder.
Kara caught the rail with one hand. The shaft spun around her, black stone and red light. Above, Jalen turned toward the service tunnel, raising the smoking rifle.
“Jalen!”
He looked down at her.
For one terrible instant, neither moved.
Then he smiled - not the careless smile he used to hide fear, but the small, unguarded one she had spent years pretending not to want.
“Find the way out,” he said.
A pulse blast struck the wall beside him. Stone collapsed between them.
Kara screamed his name and climbed, but the falling rock forced her lower. Dust poured into the shaft. Through the narrowing gap, she saw Jalen fire into the patrol line and run toward the tunnel.
Away from her.
The door began to close.
Kara reached the bottom as it sealed overhead. Darkness swallowed the last red flicker of his rifle.
She stood alone beneath the planet, his confession burning hotter than the wound in her palm.
Ahead, the hidden passage breathed cold air over her face. Somewhere beyond it waited the rumored escape routes - and perhaps the last living place on Obsidian.
Behind the sealed door, Jalen had chosen a different path.
Kara pressed her bandaged hand to the metal.
“I love you too,” she whispered, though he could not hear.
Then she turned toward the dark and walked.
