Friends To Lovers: Jasper And Emily

Jasper’s hand is already on the small of Emily’s back when she steps into the late-afternoon crowd, like he’s guiding her through a room he’s measured a thousand times. The air smells like warm asphalt and cinnamon from somewhere nearby, and Emily’s shoes stick faintly to the sidewalk as she laughs too loudly at nothing. She can’t help it-she’s got that bright, buzzing energy today, the kind that makes her dimples show up before she even thinks about them.

Jasper doesn’t say her name. He doesn’t have to.

His palm presses just enough to steady her, just enough to claim her space without making a show of it. Emily tilts her head up, sky-blue eyes catching the gray of his, and her cheeks flare immediately. “You’re walking me like I’m made of glass.”

His smirk appears-quick, crooked, like he’d been saving it for her mouth. “You’re not.”

Emily’s laughter comes out in a bright burst, and she leans closer anyway, shoulder brushing his. She’s only five-four, all warm skin and wavy brown hair falling over her shoulder like a promise, and he’s tall enough that she has to angle herself to look up at him. It should feel awkward. It never does.

“Then why are you-” She cuts herself off when Jasper’s fingers slide, firm and careful, from her back to her hip. Not a grab. Not rough. Just intimate in a way that makes her pulse jump anyway.

He keeps his gaze ahead, calm as a locked door. “Because you get ideas.”

“I always have ideas.” Emily’s voice turns sing-song with delight, like she’s daring him to argue. She reaches out, fingertips brushing the edge of his jacket sleeve, and the fabric is warm from his body. “And your job is to pretend you don’t like them.”

Jasper’s hand stays where it is. His grip doesn’t tighten, but it doesn’t loosen either. Possessive without needing volume. “My job is to keep you where you belong.”

Emily swallows. The crowd noise swells around them-cars hissing past, someone’s music leaking from a car window, the sharp clink of a storefront sign swinging in the breeze-but her world narrows to the heat of Jasper’s palm against her skin and the way his voice never changes. Steady. Loyal. Indifferent, like he’s saying something obvious and she’s the only one who might pretend otherwise.

“Jasper,” she murmurs, and the word is both warning and plea.

He finally looks at her, eyes clear and cold-gray, and the smirk flickers again. “Yeah?”

Emily’s dimples deepen, traitorous. “You’re being… weird.”

His thumb moves once-barely there, a tiny stroke that drags warmth straight through her ribs. Emily’s breath catches. She hates that her body reacts faster than her brain. She hates that she wants it.

“I’m always weird,” Jasper says. “You just notice when it’s inconvenient.”

“Mm.” Emily shifts, trying to keep her smile playful instead of desperate. She turns her head slightly, hair spilling forward, and she presses her cheek for a second against his shoulder like she’s casual. Like she hasn’t already decided she’s going to cling to him tonight if he gives her even a hint of what she wants.

Jasper’s arm tightens around her waist-not trapping, not forcing, just anchoring. The gesture is gentle enough that she should feel safe. Instead, she feels exposed.

“Don’t do that,” Emily whispers, though her body leans into him like it’s been trained.

“What?” Jasper’s tone is mild. His hand doesn’t move away.

Emily’s cheeks burn harder. “Act like you’re not-” She can’t finish. Because the truth is too loud in her chest.

Jasper’s gaze drops to her mouth, then lifts back to her eyes. He’s too calm. That’s what makes it worse. If he got angry, if he teased without intention, she could handle it. But this-this quiet possessiveness, this careful claiming-makes her feel like she’s being held to a standard she doesn’t know how to meet.

“Like I’m not what?” he asks.

Emily’s throat tightens. She tries to laugh it off. “Like you don’t care.”

Jasper’s expression doesn’t change. But something in his eyes shifts-indifference turning into something sharper, more deliberate. “I care.”

The crowd moves around them, footsteps and voices brushing past. Emily’s skin prickles as if everyone can see the way she’s trembling under his hand. She forces herself to look away, scanning the street like she’s searching for something fun to distract herself. Her cheerfulness is automatic-her armor-bright enough to blind herself.

When she spots someone she knows, her smile breaks free before she can stop it. “Oh my God-there’s Maya!”

Jasper’s hand stays at her hip as Emily turns, and for a second she forgets she’s supposed to be watching him instead of the world. Maya is waving from across the way, her hair in a messy knot, her mouth already forming Emily’s name like she’s about to pull her into a conversation.

Emily’s feet start moving, and Jasper’s palm shifts just slightly, guiding her to stop. Not hard. Not dramatic. Just enough to remind her she’s not alone in her own choices.
