Shadow And Ashley

The courtyard smelled like wet asphalt and burnt sugar from the concession stand, and Shadow stood just inside the doors like the building itself could swallow him whole. He kept his hoodie zipped high, fingers hooked around his phone like it was a shield, and told himself - quietly, stubbornly - that if he stayed small enough, Ashley would get bored.

She didn’t.

Ashley’s laugh cut across the open space before he even saw her, bright as a slap. It bounced off the brick walls and the metal bleachers, then landed in his chest like she’d aimed it there on purpose. Shadow’s gaze went straight to the cracked fountain at the center of the courtyard, to the way the water had stopped mid-spray and gathered in a trembling ring. He focused on that. On anything that wasn’t her.

“Shadow.”

Her voice slid under his concentration. Not loud enough to draw attention - yet. Just certain. Like she already owned the space between his ribs.

He didn’t turn right away. He let the sound of sneakers scuff over stone come closer, let the faint citrus of her lip gloss ride the air, then he angled his face enough to see her out of the corner of his eye.

Ashley stood with her friends in a lazy half-circle, her backpack hanging from one shoulder. Her expression was all teeth and boredom, like she’d been waiting for him to make a mistake. The sunlight caught the gold hoops in her ears and made them look sharper.

“What?” Shadow asked, flat.

Ashley’s smile widened. “You’re late.”

Shadow glanced at the digital clock on the wall near the courtyard entrance. He wasn’t. He’d checked twice. “I’m not.”

“That’s funny,” she said, and her friends snickered as if the sentence itself was a joke. Ashley took a step closer, close enough that Shadow could see the flecks of glitter on her nails. “Because Coach says you were supposed to meet him this morning.”

“I didn’t meet him,” Shadow said. He hated how his voice sounded controlled when he was anything but. He hated that she could make him feel like he’d already lost.

Ashley leaned in, lowering her voice. “Then maybe you should’ve listened.”

The courtyard noise shifted around them - someone calling out a name, the squeak of swings from the nearby playground, the distant thump of a ball against a fence. Shadow kept his eyes on Ashley’s mouth, on the way her words moved like she was controlling the air. He wanted to walk away. He wanted to keep his head down and let her have her little performance without him.

But then she reached into her backpack, slow and deliberate, and pulled out something crumpled.

A folded paper, creased so many times it looked stubborn.

She held it up like evidence. “This showed up in your locker.”

Shadow’s stomach tightened. The paper was plain from where he stood, but the sight of it made his skin go cold. He didn’t remember putting anything in his locker. He barely remembered yesterday with anything resembling order.

Ashley watched his face, waiting for him to react.

He refused to give her anything. “That’s not mine.”

“Oh, come on,” she said, drawing out the words, making them sweet enough to sting. “You think I don’t know you? Shadow, you act like you’re invisible, but you always leave a trail. You always - ”

“Stop,” he said, and it came out harsher than he meant. He heard it, the edge in his own tone, and hated that she’d gotten it.

Ashley’s eyes flicked to his friends, to the ring of attention she’d built without raising her voice too much. Her smile sharpened. “Make me.”

Shadow swallowed. He forced his shoulders to loosen, forced his gaze back to the fountain, to the ring of water trembling in the sun. He could do this. He could get through the day without provoking her. He could keep his hands to himself and his voice calm.

But Ashley didn’t want calm. Ashley wanted him to react.

She unfolded the paper with a slow, theatrical snap. The sound carried - dry, crisp - across the courtyard. Heads tilted. A couple students turned from where they’d been eating fries. The air between Shadow and Ashley tightened, like everyone could feel the moment before a fight.

Ashley held the paper higher. “Read it.”

Shadow’s pulse kicked against his throat. He hadn’t agreed to anything. He hadn’t asked for this. He hadn’t even wanted to be in the courtyard at all, not with Ashley’s mood already sliding toward him like a storm.

“No,” he said, and his voice was quieter now, more dangerous for how carefully he kept it steady.

Ashley’s brow lifted. “No?”

Shadow stared at the paper without looking directly at it. If he saw the words clearly, he’d have to admit something. If he admitted something, Ashley would use it. That was her whole thing - turning his silence into a confession.

“You don’t get to do this,” he said.

She laughed, and the sound made his skin crawl. “Watch me.”

Ashley took a step closer and angled the folded paper toward him, close enough that he could smell the faint chemical scent of ink....
