A Young Man And His Wife

The café door struck the brass bell so hard it rattled against the glass.

“I asked you a question, Evan.”

Mara stood beside their usual table, one hand clenched around her phone, the other pressed flat against the back of the chair. Around her, cups clinked and chairs scraped over the tiled floor. A milk steamer shrieked behind the counter. Nobody looked at them for more than a second, but Evan felt every glance like a warning.

He had already said the wrong thing twice.

The first time, he had told her she was overreacting. The second time, he had said, “It’s not what you think,” even though he had not yet explained what she thought.

Now she was waiting for something honest.

Evan’s mouth went dry. “Mara, I can explain.”

“Then explain.”

Her voice was low, which was worse than shouting. Mara only lowered her voice when she was trying not to break something - usually a glass, sometimes a promise.

Evan looked at the envelope on the table between them. White paper. His name written across the front in the careful block letters Mara used for bills. The corner had been torn open.

He had left it in the drawer beneath the television, beneath old receipts and the spare keys. He had meant to deal with it before she found it.

“I didn’t want you to see that like this,” he said.

“How else was I supposed to see it?”

The barista called a name. Someone laughed near the window. Outside, a bus groaned at the curb, its brakes releasing with a long metallic sigh.

Evan reached for the envelope.

Mara pulled it away.

“No.”

“Mara.”

“You don’t get to take it back.”

“I’m not trying to take it back.”

“You’re trying to control what I know.”

The accusation landed cleanly because there was truth inside it. Evan looked toward the café window. Their apartment building stood across the street, its brick face cut into squares by dark windows. Their third-floor window was visible above the awning. The curtain was still open from that morning.

He had left home believing he had time.

That was before Mara found the bank notice. Before she read the amount. Before she asked why the payment had come from their joint account and why he had not told her.

He should have answered then. Instead, he had grabbed his jacket and said he needed air.

Now the distance between the apartment and the café felt like a trap with glass walls.

“I was going to tell you,” he said.

“When?”

“Today.”

“Before or after I found out?”

Evan rubbed his palms against his jeans. The fabric caught against his skin. He wanted to sit, but Mara remained standing, and sitting would make him look smaller than he already felt.

“I made a mistake.”

Her eyes sharpened. “What kind?”

He saw the question beneath the question. What did you do? Who did you do it for? What else have you hidden?

The café door opened again. A gust of cold air pushed through the room, lifting the napkins on their table. Mara’s hair moved across her cheek. She tucked it behind her ear without looking away from him.

Evan drew breath.

“I borrowed - ”

A violent crack split the café.

The lights went out.

For one stunned second, the only sound was the hiss of the espresso machine dying. Then the room erupted. A chair toppled. Someone cursed. A child began to cry near the pastry case.

Emergency lights flickered red along the ceiling.

“Mara,” Evan said.

She stepped back from him. “Don’t.”

“I need to finish.”

“You had a chance.”

The front windows flashed white. Outside, a transformer popped somewhere along the street, followed by another sharp blast. People surged toward the door, but the manager shouted for everyone to stay inside.

A woman near the counter screamed that smoke was coming from the alley.

The crowd compressed around them. Someone bumped Evan’s shoulder. A paper cup rolled beneath the table. Mara’s phone slipped from her hand and struck the floor.

She bent for it.

Evan reached down at the same time. Their fingers touched against the cold case.

For an instant, neither moved.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

Mara’s face changed - not softened, exactly, but opened enough for the words to reach her.

Then a man crashed into Evan from behind.

His shoulder slammed into the table. The envelope flew, skidding across the floor beneath a row of chairs.

“Mara, wait.”

She straightened with her phone in hand. “You’re unbelievable.”

“I’m trying to tell you.”

“No. You’re trying to stop this from becoming worse for you.”

The emergency lights strobed over her face, turning her expression red, then gray, then red again.

A fire alarm began to pulse overhead.

The manager unlocked the side exit, and the crowd shifted toward it. Mara moved with them.

Evan caught her wrist.

She looked down at his hand.

He let go immediately.

“I’ll come home,” he said. “Just give me an hour.”

“I’m not waiting for another version of the truth.”

“There is only one version.”

“Then it should be easy to tell.”

She pushed through the side door.

Cold rain had begun outside, thin and needling....
