Love Is Real

The first time I heard that God’s love isn’t just a nice idea but something real - something that reaches me - I felt almost offended by how simple it sounded. I mean, if love is real, why does it still feel like distance? Why do some days my prayers bounce off the ceiling, and why do I wonder whether God could really want me?

Then I ran into a verse that doesn’t treat love like a mood. It treats love like a decision God made, and a gift He gave. Not because I cleaned myself up first. Not because I earned it. Because He is love, and He moved toward me.

> “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

If God’s love is real, it shows up in what He gives - not in what you can manage to feel.

When you read “so loved,” it’s not describing God’s emotions like they rise and fall with the day. It’s describing God’s action. He loved the world (not a select few who “get it right”), and He gave His Son. That’s why this book starts here: God’s love is real, and it reaches you.

And notice the hinge in that verse: “whoever believes.” Believing isn’t blind denial of your messy life. It’s trusting that God’s love is bigger than your doubts, bigger than your past, and bigger than your family history. It’s also honest about the other half of the promise: “should not perish.” Scripture doesn’t hand out love as a vague comfort for everyone, no matter what they do with Jesus. It calls people to receive Him.

So if you’re thinking, “Yeah, but does He really love me?” - John 3:16 answers with a gift you can point to. God didn’t just say “I love you.” He gave.

Reflection

Here’s what “love is real” means on a regular Tuesday morning, not just in church songs. It means God’s love doesn’t depend on your performance. It doesn’t evaporate when you fail. It doesn’t shrink when you’re tired, or when you’ve been hurt, or when you’re not sure how to pray without sounding like you’re faking it.

Romans 5:8 puts a spotlight on this kind of love: Christ died for us while we were still sinners. That word “still” matters. Your life has seasons where you feel better, and seasons where you feel stuck. Your heart has days when you’re grateful and days when you’re numb. God’s love doesn’t wait for you to become a different person before it reaches you. It comes to you as you are - and then it begins to change you.

For some of us, the hardest part isn’t believing God loves the world. The hardest part is believing God loves me, personally. Maybe you grew up with love that came with conditions. Maybe your family said “I care” but only when you behaved. Or maybe you’ve just lived long enough to know that people disappoint. So you wonder if God’s love is the same kind of thing - conditional, shaky, or hard to reach.

But Scripture doesn’t treat God’s love as fragile. It treats it as steadfast. His love is not fragile; it’s faithful. You can feel far away and still be held by the truth that God has already acted. You can be inconsistent and still be loved. You can have questions and still be welcome.

Another thing I want to say plainly: loving everyone doesn’t mean treating everyone the same way in the sense of “no response matters.” God’s love is offered to all, and Scripture presses people to come to Jesus in faith. That’s not fear-mongering. That’s love being honest. Real love doesn’t just soothe - it invites. It calls. It rescues.

So if you’re reading this with a guarded heart - fine. Bring your guarded heart. God’s love can handle your questions. It can handle your slowness. It can handle you not knowing what to say yet. The point is: God’s love is real, and He loves everyone. And that means you’re not outside the reach of the gift.

Practice for Today

1. Write one sentence of honest belief.

Set a timer for 2 minutes and finish this sentence: “Right now, I believe God’s love is real because __.” Use something specific from Scripture (like “He gave His Son,” from John 3:16). Don’t polish it. Just write what’s true today.

2. Do a timed Scripture-and-breath prayer (3 minutes).

Read John 3:16 once slowly, then pray quietly while you breathe: inhale - “God so loved,” exhale - “that He gave.” Repeat the phrase three times. If you don’t know what to say, don’t panic. Let the verse carry you.

3. Journal a “distance-to-trust” shift (5 minutes).

Ask yourself: “Where do I feel far from God right now - what’s the exact feeling?” Then write the next question: “What does John 3:16 say God did about my distance?”

Example prompt: If your feeling is “I don’t think I’m worth it,” write what the verse says God did anyway: He gave His Son that whoever believes would not perish.

Small habits like these aren’t hoops to jump through. They’re ways of turning toward what’s true when your feelings lag behind. And that matters, because feelings can be loud - but Scripture is louder.
