A Symphony Of Two Souls

The Seabright Harbor boardwalk smelled like salt and diesel, the kind of sharp tang that got into Mara Ellison’s hair and made her feel awake all the way down to her bones. She had come for a simple errand - deliver a package to a woman with a cantankerous schedule and a smile that never reached her eyes - but the harbor was already loud with celebration. Music leaked from open windows. Someone laughed too hard. The distant clank of rigging hit the air like steady percussion.

Mara tightened her grip on the parcel and stepped around a cluster of folding chairs. Her shoes scuffed against damp planks, and the stone steps down to the water were slick in places where mist had settled overnight. She paused at the top to steady herself, watching the crowd below. She’d almost reached the place she needed - almost - when she noticed him.

A musician, alone where the boardwalk kept insisting on company. He lingered near the harbor steps, half turned toward the water as if the sea were the only thing that could answer him. Wind tugged at the hem of his coat. His instrument case lay open at his feet, not like an invitation, but like something he’d set down so he wouldn’t have to hold it. Every few seconds he looked up - toward people, toward sound, toward the bright churn of bodies - then looked away again, too quickly, as if eye contact might cost him.

Mara shouldn’t have stared. She told herself that as she descended, one careful step at a time, the stone cool under her palm when she caught herself against the rail. The boards below were slick; the air was thick with fried dough and seaweed. Somewhere behind her, a bell rang and a cheer rose, then faded into music.

He didn’t move to greet anyone. He didn’t take the space like he belonged in it. He carried himself like someone waiting for a door that might never open.

Her errand suddenly felt smaller than the pull she couldn’t explain. Mara’s stomach tightened with the same nervous heat she got when she’d almost said something true and stopped herself. She told herself it was curiosity - just a woman noticing a man in the wrong place. But her gaze kept snagging on the set of his shoulders, on the way his fingers flexed near the case lid as though they wanted to play and didn’t dare.

When she reached the steps, the crowd surged around her, and she had to angle her body sideways to avoid bumping into a pair of tourists. The musician remained just out of reach - close enough that she could see the dark smudge of wind on his cheek, the way his eyes kept tracking the flow of people like he was measuring escape routes.

“Are you waiting for someone?” Mara asked before she could talk herself out of it.

The words came out steadier than she felt. Maybe because she’d spent most of her life being the one who asked questions instead of letting them pile up inside.

His head snapped toward her. For a heartbeat, the sea noise seemed to swallow everything else. His expression didn’t brighten. If anything, it tightened, like he’d expected the harbor to be full of strangers and had still been surprised when one looked back at him.

“I’m not - ” He stopped, swallowed, and tried again. “No. Not exactly.”

Mara shifted the parcel against her hip so her hands were visible. The movement made the package rub against her coat, a soft rasp that sounded louder than it should have. “Then why are you here?”

His gaze flicked to the case at his feet. Then to her. Then - too quickly - to the crowd moving behind her. “Because the water’s honest,” he said, and the phrase landed with a strange weight, like a line he’d practiced and hated.

Mara almost laughed. Not because it was funny, but because it was too raw to be a joke. “The water doesn’t tell you anything,” she said. “It just keeps going.”

He studied her face like he was deciding whether she deserved more than half-truths. In the space of that look, Mara felt an odd intimacy bloom - like standing too close in a quiet room and realizing the other person could hear her breathing.

“Sometimes it tells me enough,” he murmured.

Her name rose in her throat - Mara Ellison, as if saying it would make him safer, make him real. She didn’t. She kept her attention on the case, on the way the lid had been lifted but not closed, the way the inside looked worn where fingers had touched it a thousand times.

“You play?” she asked.

The question seemed to make him uncomfortable. His jaw flexed. “I used to.”

Mara’s eyebrows drew together. “Used to.”

A gust of wind came off the water, cold and damp, lifting strands of her hair into her mouth. She tasted salt. The harbor noise pressed against her ears - voices, gulls, the clatter of someone dragging a cooler. Through it all, his silence felt deliberate.

He crouched slightly, not to pick up the instrument, but to adjust something in the case. A folded piece of paper - torn at one corner - peeked out beneath the lining. His hand covered it quickly, as if he’d been caught stealing.

Mara saw it anyway.
