WARATAH BAY: 3:33 AM

A horror story by James Warner

CHAPTER 1 — WELCOME TO WARATAH BAY

The bus finally stopped.

Everyone exploded out of their seats.

“WE’RE HERE!”

“ABOUT TIME!”

“GIANT SWING, HERE I COME!”

James grabbed his backpack and stepped off the bus. The salty smell of the ocean hit him immediately.

In front of him stood a wooden sign:

WARATAH BAY CAMP

Beyond it were cabins, trees, walking tracks and, in the distance, the ocean.

James looked around.

“This place is sick.”

His friends agreed.

The teachers gathered everyone together and explained the rules.

Stay with your group.

Don’t go into restricted areas.

Don’t leave your cabin after lights-out.

And most importantly—

“Stay away from the old cabins near the northern track,” one teacher said.

James raised an eyebrow.

“Why?”

The teacher paused.

“They’re unsafe.”

That answer somehow made James even more curious.

The first day was amazing.

They went on activities, explored the camp and eventually reached the giant swing.

James climbed into the seat.

“READY?”

“YEAHHHH!”

The rope pulled backwards.

Then—

WHOOSH!

James flew through the air.

For a few seconds, everything below him disappeared.

It was perfect.

That night, everyone returned to their cabins exhausted.

James climbed into his top bunk.

His friends were still laughing and talking.

Eventually, the cabin became quiet.

James closed his eyes.

And fell asleep.

He woke suddenly.

His room was completely dark.

James looked at the clock.

3:33 AM.

He heard something outside.

Step.

Silence.

Step.

Another step.

James sat up.

Someone was walking toward the cabin.

Then—

KNOCK.

James froze.

KNOCK.

His friends were asleep.

Then came the third knock.

KNOCK.

James slowly climbed down from his bunk.

He walked toward the window.

There was nobody outside.

Just darkness.

He pulled the curtain back.

For a moment, he saw nothing.

Then a shadow moved between the trees.

James blinked.

It was gone.

CHAPTER 2 — THE FOOTPRINTS

The next morning, James told his friends.

Nobody believed him.

“You probably dreamed it,” Angus said.

“I definitely didn’t.”

“Did you check the time?”

“3:33.”

Angus stopped smiling.

“Okay… that’s creepy.”

After breakfast, they went outside.

James noticed something in the mud beside the cabin.

Footprints.

They started near the trees and continued toward the cabin door.

James crouched down.

“These weren’t here yesterday.”

Angus looked at them.

“Those are huge.”

They followed the footprints.

The trail went behind the cabin.

Then it suddenly stopped.

There was nothing beyond it.

No footprints.

No person.

Nothing.

James looked toward the trees.

“Someone was here.”

A teacher suddenly called from behind them.

“Guys! Come back to the activity area.”

James looked back.

When he turned around again, one of the footprints had disappeared.

That afternoon, James noticed another strange thing.

The door to an old building near the edge of camp was open.

He remembered what the teacher had said.

Stay away from the old cabins.

A rusty sign hung above the door.

CAMP STORAGE — NO ENTRY

James stared at it.

Something inside moved.

He stepped backwards.

“Did you see that?”

Angus shook his head.

“See what?”

James looked again.

Nothing.

But on the ground outside the building was an old metal key.

James picked it up.

Engraved into the metal were three numbers:

333

CHAPTER 3 — THE OLD CABINS

That night, James couldn’t stop thinking about the key.

He showed it to his friends.

“Maybe it’s for the old cabins,” Angus whispered.

“We’re not supposed to go there.”

“Exactly.”

They stared at each other.

Nobody said anything.

Then Angus smiled.

“Tomorrow?”

James sighed.

“Tomorrow.”

The next afternoon, they waited until their group had finished its activities.

Then they slipped away.

They followed the northern track.

The further they walked, the quieter the camp became.

Eventually, they saw them.

The old cabins.

They looked like they hadn’t been used in years.

Broken windows.

Rotting wooden walls.

Trees growing around the buildings.

James held up the key.

“There’s no way this opens anything.”

They reached the largest cabin.

There was a small metal lock on the door.

James inserted the key.

CLICK.

The door opened.

Nobody spoke.

They stepped inside.

Dust covered everything.

Old beds.

Broken chairs.

A rusted noticeboard.

Then James noticed something written on the wall.

Three words.

DON’T STAY AWAKE.

Angus stared at it.

“What does that mean?”

A noise came from upstairs.

THUMP.

Everyone froze.

Another.

THUMP.

James whispered:

“There’s someone up there.”

They ran outside.

The door slammed behind them.

They sprinted back toward the main camp.

But James stopped.

“Wait.”

He looked back.

Standing in the upstairs window was a figure.

Completely still.

Watching them.

James couldn’t see its face.

Then the figure slowly raised one hand.

And pointed directly at him.

CHAPTER 4 — THE MISSING FRIEND

That evening, James barely spoke.

He kept thinking about the figure.

At dinner, Angus noticed.

“You alright?”

James nodded.

“Yeah.”

He wasn’t.

After dinner, everyone returned to their cabins.

A teacher counted the students.

Then counted again.

“Wait.”

Everyone looked around.

One student was missing.

The teacher called their name.

Nothing.

They checked the bathrooms.

The dining hall.

The activity areas.

Nothing.

Then someone found a backpack.

It was lying beside the northern track.

James recognised it immediately.

It belonged to Angus.

James’s stomach dropped.

“No.”

The teachers told everyone to stay inside.

Search teams headed toward the bush.

James looked through the cabin window.

The trees were completely dark.

Then—

A light appeared.

Deep inside the forest.

Three flashes.

FLASH. FLASH. FLASH.

James whispered:

“333.”

CHAPTER 5 — THE NOTE

James couldn’t sit there anymore.

He grabbed his jacket.

Two friends followed him.

They sneaked outside and headed toward the northern track.

“James, this is a terrible idea.”

“I know.”

They continued into the bush.

After several minutes, they found Angus.

He was sitting beside a tree.

“ANGUS!”

He looked up.

“You shouldn’t have come.”

James helped him stand.

“What happened?”

Angus pointed deeper into the trees.

“I heard someone calling my name.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

Then he handed James a piece of paper.

James unfolded it.

Written in messy black letters were the words:

3:33 — THE CAMP REMEMBERS.

Suddenly, a loud crack came from behind them.

CRACK.

They turned.

Nothing.

Then another.

CRACK.

Something was moving through the trees.

“RUN!”

They sprinted.

CHAPTER 6 — THE RECORD

Back at the cabin, the teachers were relieved to find Angus.

But James couldn’t forget the note.

Later, while everyone slept, he searched the internet on his phone for information about the camp.

He found an old article.

WARATAH BAY CAMP — INCIDENT REPORTED

James read it.

Years earlier, a group of students had reported hearing footsteps around the cabins at exactly 3:33 AM.

The article said the camp had briefly closed.

But nobody knew why.

James scrolled further.

Then he found something worse.

A photograph.

It showed the old cabins.

Standing in front of them was a group of students.

James zoomed in.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

2001.

Underneath was a handwritten message:

ONE OF THEM NEVER LEFT.

James dropped the phone.

CHAPTER 7 — 3:33

That night, James stayed awake.

He watched the clock.

3:29.

3:30.

3:31.

His heart started beating faster.

3:32.

The cabin was silent.

Then—

3:33.

The lights went out.

Every single one.

James heard breathing.

Not his.

Something was standing outside the cabin.

Step.

Step.

Step.

Then the door handle moved.

Slowly.

James grabbed his flashlight.

The handle stopped.

Silence.

Then—

BANG!

The door shook.

Everyone screamed.

Another bang.

BANG!

James shone his flashlight toward the window.

A shadow stood outside.

It was tall.

Completely motionless.

Then it disappeared.

The lights suddenly came back on.

Nobody moved.

James looked at the clock.

It read:

3:34 AM.

CHAPTER 8 — THE SECRET ROOM

The next day, James and his friends decided they had to find out what was happening.

They returned to the old cabin in daylight.

Inside, they searched every room.

Behind an old cupboard, James noticed a gap in the wall.

He pushed the cupboard.

It moved.

Behind it was a hidden door.

Angus stared.

“No way.”

James opened it.

A narrow staircase led underground.

They descended.

At the bottom was a small room.

Inside were boxes filled with old camp records.

James opened one.

Names.

Dates.

Incident reports.

Then he found the 2001 report.

The final page had one sentence:

The students heard the footsteps every night at 3:33.

Below it was another line.

The footsteps always stopped outside Cabin 7.

James looked at Angus.

“What cabin are we in?”

Angus’s face went pale.

“Cabin 7.”

CHAPTER 9 — THE FOOTSTEPS

They raced back.

The sun was disappearing.

James could hear the ocean in the distance.

The camp suddenly felt completely different.

They reached Cabin 7.

The door was open.

Inside, the room was empty.

Then they heard it.

Step.

From outside.

Step.

Closer.

Step.

Closer.

James whispered:

“Don’t move.”

The footsteps stopped outside the door.

The handle slowly turned.

James held his breath.

The door opened.

Nobody was there.

But on the floor was something new.

A photograph.

James picked it up.

It was a picture of the old camp.

On the back:

YOU FOUND ME.

Then every light in the cabin went out.

CHAPTER 10 — THE LAST NIGHT

They ran.

They didn’t stop until they reached the main camp.

The teachers were gathering everyone for the final night.

James looked at the clock.

3:20 AM.

Ten minutes.

He knew what was coming.

He told the teacher everything.

The old cabins.

The records.

The photograph.

The footsteps.

The teacher’s face changed.

“You found the records?”

James nodded.

The teacher looked toward the northern track.

Then she said quietly:

“We should have told you.”

Years ago, something had happened at the camp.

Nobody knew exactly what.

But students had continued reporting the same strange noises.

Always at 3:33.

The teacher ordered everyone to stay together.

The clock changed.

3:31.

3:32.

James stared at it.

Then—

3:33.

Every light around the camp went out.

A scream came from the northern track.

Then silence.

The lights returned.

Nobody was there.

Except for a single piece of paper lying in the middle of the path.

James picked it up.

It said:

THANK YOU FOR REMEMBERING.

CHAPTER 11 — SEE YOU NEXT YEAR

Morning finally arrived.

The sun rose over Waratah Bay.

Everything looked normal again.

The students packed their bags.

The teachers loaded everything onto the bus.

James looked back at the camp.

For the first time, it didn’t look scary.

It looked peaceful.

Maybe it was finally over.

The bus started moving.

James sat by the window.

As they drove away, he noticed the camp disappearing behind the trees.

Then he saw something.

A figure standing beside Cabin 7.

James blinked.

It was gone.

He looked down at his backpack.

Something was sticking out of the side pocket.

He pulled it out.

It was the old key.

The one marked:

333

James stared at it.

He hadn’t taken it.

He was sure of it.

Then he noticed something scratched into the metal.

It wasn’t there before.

Four words.

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR.

James looked out the window.

The bus disappeared down the road.

Behind them, Waratah Bay became smaller and smaller.

But somewhere back at the camp…

A clock ticked.

3:32.

3:33.

And a cabin door slowly opened.

End of chapter one.
