Abstract

This study explores the impact of Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction on pupil learning within Key Stage 5 (KS5) classrooms. With increasing emphasis on evidence-based teaching, Rosenshine’s framework has become widely adopted in schools; however, there is limited research focusing specifically on its application at post-16 level. This research aims to examine how these principles influence pupil learning, particularly in relation to retention, understanding, and independence.

A mixed-method case study approach was used within a post-primary school in Northern Ireland. Data was collected through pupil questionnaires, teacher interviews, and a pupil focus group, allowing for both quantitative trends and qualitative insights to be explored. The findings indicate that strategies such as retrieval practice, modelling, and guided instruction have a positive impact on pupil learning, particularly in supporting long-term memory and improving understanding of complex material. In addition, structured teaching approaches were found to enhance pupil confidence and engagement.

However, the study also highlights several challenges. These include time constraints, differences across subject areas, and the ongoing tension between providing structured support and promoting independent learning. While teachers view Rosenshine’s Principles positively, their implementation is not always consistent and is often shaped by contextual factors.

Overall, the research concludes that Rosenshine’s Principles can significantly enhance KS5 learning when applied flexibly and thoughtfully. Rather than being used as a rigid framework, they are most effective when adapted to suit the needs of pupils, subjects, and classroom contexts.

Acknowledgements

To Dr William Kitchen, thank you for all your guidance, support, and encouragement over the past four years. Your support has been invaluable and has consistently encouraged me to strive towards reaching my full potential. I am very grateful for the time, effort, and belief you have invested in me throughout my journey.

I would also like to thank my Mummy and Daddy for their unwavering support throughout my life and education. Your constant love, encouragement, and belief in me have provided the foundation for everything I have achieved. Thank you for always being there and for giving me the motivation and strength to continue striving towards my goals. I will be forever grateful for all that you have done for me. I love you both so very much.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge a very special person, Olivia - you truly are the best girl in the world. My final year of university has been so much better simply because you have been part of my life, and I feel incredibly lucky to have you in my life. I am deeply grateful for our bond, the love we share, and everything we have. You are my best friend, and I love you sometimes more than you will ever know. There are moments where I wish I could find the perfect words to explain just how much you mean to me, but the truth is, I don’t think they exist. Just know that I love you more deeply than I could ever fully put into words - more than you may ever truly realise.
