Stanka & Stinky’s Talent Show

The bell above the classroom door jingled like a tiny bell in a tea cup. Stanka sat on the windowsill, knees hugged to her chest, watching clouds that looked like cotton candy drift past. Next to her, Stinky wiggled his nose and made a secret face. They were best friends who shared everything: snacks, crayons, and a very silly sense of humor.

Today the school buzzed with posters-Talent Show! Talent Show! Stanka's stomach did a little flip. "What if my talent isn't... normal?" she whispered. Stinky puffed out his cheeks and let out a small, proud toot that sounded like a kazoo. A giggle escaped them both. But then Stanka saw the poster of singers and dancers and felt a tiny pinch of worry. What could they do that would be special?

At recess, Stanka and Stinky sat under the big maple tree and tried out ideas. Stanka sang a note that cracked like an egg. Stinky tried juggling pebbles and only managed to drop them in a perfect line down the hill. They laughed until their tummies hurt. Then Stinky, feeling brave, did a long, wobbly fart that sounded like a barking dog on a trampoline. Nearby, a group of kids turned and grinned. "Do it again!" called Maya, clapping.

Stanka’s eyes widened. She had always been a little embarrassed by how often funny noises escaped when she was nervous. But with Stinky making the noises into jokes, those noises started to feel, not silly to hide, but silly to share. They practiced different sounds: the trumpet toot, the sneaky whisper puff, and the big boomy belly laugh fart. They even timed a duet where one would start a rhythm and the other would finish with a silly surprise. Each try was a mix of giggles and "oops" moments-like the time they laughed so hard Stinka-and Stinka?-fell into a pile of leaves.

The problem felt smaller by the end of the week: they had to figure out how to make their unusual talent feel like a show and not just a joke in the yard. They wrote a short routine with silly names for each sound and practiced bowing so the audience would clap, not run. On the last rehearsal, they high-fived, proud of their plan.

That night, under a blanket of stars and with their poster tacked on the fridge, Stanka and Stinky smiled at each other. They had discovered that their "stinky superpower" could make people laugh together-and that being uniquely stinky could be wonderfully, wonderfully fun. Being yourself is the best kind of talent, and friends make every silly sound feel like a standing ovation.
