Chapter 1
The Long Walk to IT Class
Cassie nearly tripped over her own shoelace as she raced down the sidewalk.
“Slow down!” Rick called. He hurried after her, holding his neat backpack with both hands. “School is not going to disappear.”
“It might!” Cassie said, her purple hair bouncing, around her face, and her bright eyes shone. “Today is our first IT class!”
Rayne Hopper skipped beside them, her pearl-and-pink hair shining in the morning sun. Her long rabbit ears bobbed with every step. “We could design a flying lunchbox,” she said.
“Or a robot that draws cats,” Cassie added.
“Or we could first arrive at school on time,” Rick said. He checked the small clock on his backpack strap. “That would be a good start to the day.”
The neighborhood was busy. Buses rumbled past. Bicycle bells rang. The air smelled like warm croissants from a nearby café. At the school gate, students packed the sidewalk, jostling like a busy crowd.
Cassie stopped to watch a delivery cart carrying boxes. One box had a picture of a tiny 3D-printed bridge.
“Look!” she cried. “We could build that!” Cassie exclaimed. “A bridge with moving wheels. Or a castle with a secret snack drawer.”
“Cassie,” Rick urged, “we have three minutes.”
Cassie blinked. Rayne looked at the clock above the school doors.
“Three minutes until class?” Rayne asked.
“Until the morning bell,” Rick said. “And IT class is this afternoon.”
“Oh.” Cassie tucked a loose strand of hair behind one ear. “Then we have plenty of time to think.”
They hurried inside. Cassie’s backpack caught on a door handle, a pencil, stickers, and a crumpled drawing tumbled out.
Rayne helped gather them. “Your castle has six towers,” she said reaching for the drawing.
“Seven,” Cassie said. “The last one is under the bag of crushed cookies.”
Rick lifted the bag of crumbs with two fingers and placed it in the side pocket. “Your backpack needs a plan.”
“My backpack has a plan,” Cassie said. “It is called ‘hold everything.’”
The morning rushed by with reading, math, and lunch. When the afternoon bell rang, Cassie was drawing a printer with cat ears. Rick looked at the clock and froze.
“We have to go or we're going to be late for IT class!”
The three friends dashed through the hall. Their shoes squeaked on the shiny floor. Cassie’s backpack swung open, and her papers fluttered behind her like white birds.
“Keep going!” Rayne called while trying to grab the floating sheets out of the air mid-sprint.
They reached the IT room just as Mr. Wolfe closed the door. His dark hair had a purple lock, and his sharp eyes smiled.
“Right on time,” he said.
Cassie slid into her seat, breathing fast. Dropping her backpack on the desk, her drawing tumbled out along with, a sock and three colored pencils.
Mr. Wolfe looked at the sock, then at Cassie.
“An interesting organization system,” he said.
Cassie grinned. “It is still being tested.”
The class began, and Cassie leaned forward as Mr. Wolfe showed them a 3D printer. Its soft hum filled the room.
They had made it to IT, but Cassie’s big ideas were already spilling everywhere. Sometimes, she thought, the best plans began with a little mess.
