The Shape of Regret Chapter 1

• Ren Arakawa, 17 — messy black hair with a white streak at his right temple, school uniform worn loosely, impulsive and protective. After the incident, a black fracture-like mark appears from his left palm toward his elbow. His supernatural ability is Resonance, allowing him to redirect and amplify the emotional energy of Curses—but doing so lets the ancient Curse inside him influence his instincts. - Toma Kisaragi, 18 — disciplined trainee Exorcist, short dark hair, immaculate uniform, calm expression. Uses a collapsible spear called Shigure, whose metal edge can sever supernatural energy. Distrustful of Ren initially. - Mio Saegusa, 19 — fearless weapons specialist, short auburn hair, sharp eyes, cropped Exorcist jacket over practical combat clothing. Carries several spirit-forged weapons and treats dangerous situations with dry humor. - Master Genzō Kurobane, 46 — eccentric veteran Exorcist. Tall, broad-shouldered, perpetually tired-looking, round spectacles, long coat covered in stitched protective charms. Uses a wooden cane that conceals a supernatural blade. His apparent laziness hides enormous power. - The Curse "Mourn" — an ancient entity born from generations of accumulated human regret. Usually appears as a tall, faceless humanoid wrapped in strips of shadow resembling funeral cloth. Its defining visual feature is a circular hollow in the center of its chest. - The antagonist, "The Pale Archivist" — an ancient intelligence manipulating Curses and humans. Its true identity and purpose remain unrevealed in Chapter 1.

Panel 1: Wide establishing shot of Kurohama City at night. Rain falls between dense apartment towers and elevated train tracks. Thousands of windows glow. Narration: "Every city has things its people refuse to talk about."

Panel 2: A commuter walks beneath an overpass. Behind him, an enormous distorted silhouette crawls across the concrete wall.

Panel 3: Close-up of the commuter's face. He suddenly shivers. Commuter: "...Why do I feel like someone's watching me?"

Panel 4: The silhouette opens a huge, tooth-filled mouth—though the commuter cannot see it.

Panel 5: Black panel. Two white eyes appear. Narration: "Fear leaves a residue." "Sometimes that residue learns to move."

Panel 1: Morning. Ren sleeps through his alarm. Alarm: BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

Panel 2: His hand blindly smashes the alarm. Ren: "Five more minutes."

Panel 3: His bedroom door flies open. His mother is off-panel. Mother: "Ren!"

Panel 4: Ren jolts upright, hair sticking everywhere. Ren: "I'm awake!"

Panel 5: He races downstairs while pulling on his school jacket. Mother: "Your shoes!" Ren: "I've got them!"

Panel 6: Ren runs outside wearing one shoe. Narration: "Ren Arakawa had a talent for arriving exactly one second before disaster."

Panel 1: Ren sprints through a crowded street toward school.

Panel 2: He spots a younger student dropping notebooks.

Panel 3: Ren stops despite being late and helps gather them. Ren: "Here." Student: "Thanks!"

Panel 4: Ren notices a faint dark smear floating above the student's shoulder. His expression changes. Ren: "...Did you see that?" Student: "See what?"

Panel 5: Close-up of the smear. It has tiny finger-like projections. Narration: "Ren couldn't explain it, but sometimes he saw things other people couldn't."

Panel 1: Classroom. Teacher writes on the board. Teacher: "Today's assignment—"

Panel 2: Ren stares out the window.

Panel 3: Across the street, a woman suddenly drops her umbrella and clutches her chest.

Panel 4: A tiny black creature crawls along the building behind her. Ren: "...There."

Panel 5: Toma, seated two rows away, notices Ren staring. Toma: "What are you looking at?" Ren: "You don't see it?"

Panel 6: Toma looks through the window. Nothing visible. Toma: "No." His eyes narrow.

Panel 1: Lunch break. Ren and three classmates walk through an older school corridor. Classmate: "There's a rumor the basement is haunted."

Panel 2: Ren laughs. Ren: "Haunted by what? Mold?"

Panel 3: The lights flicker.

Panel 4: At the end of the corridor stands a shadowy child-sized figure. Nobody notices except Ren. The figure points downward. Figure: "...Help..." Page-turn beat.

Pages 6–12 — The Encounter

Panel 1: Ren approaches the figure. Ren: "Hey."

Panel 2: His classmates call after him. Classmate: "Ren, where are you going?"

Panel 3: Ren reaches the figure. It vanishes.

Panel 4: The basement door behind it slowly opens. SFX: KRRRNNNK.

Panel 5: A wave of freezing darkness pours through the doorway. Ren's smile disappears. Ren: "...Okay. That's new."

Panel 1: Ren's classmates approach.

Panel 2: The hallway suddenly stretches impossibly long.

Panel 3: Black hands emerge from the walls. Classmate: "WHAT—?!"

Panel 4: Ren pushes everyone behind him. Ren: "Run!"

Panel 5: A Curse materializes: a huge quadrupedal mass made from overlapping human faces.

Panel 6: The creature lunges. Ren braces himself.

Panel 1: Ren grabs a fire extinguisher.

Panel 2: He swings it into the Curse. SFX: CLANG!

Panel 3: The extinguisher crumples. Ren: "...That didn't work."

Panel 4: The Curse knocks Ren through a classroom door.

Panel 5: Ren lies amid broken desks. His classmates scream outside. Ren: "Get... away from them."

Panel 1: Ren stands despite blood running from his forehead.

Panel 2: The Curse charges.

Panel 3: Ren remembers the younger student from earlier. Narration: "He was afraid."

Panel 4: Ren's fist tightens. Narration: "He had always been afraid."

Panel 5: He steps between the Curse and his classmates. Ren: "But I'm more afraid of doing nothing."

Panel 6: A black pulse erupts from his hand. SFX: WHUMM!

Panel 1: The pulse freezes the Curse midair.

Panel 2: Ren stares at his glowing palm. Ren: "What... did I just do?"

Panel 3: Something enormous appears behind him. Only its hollow chest and faceless head are visible. Voice: "You opened the door."

Panel 4: Close-up of Ren's terrified eye.

Panel 1 — Full-width: The ancient Curse manifests behind Ren, towering over the school. Its body is wrapped in flowing strips of shadow. Mourn: "Then let me answer."

Panel 2: Its hand touches Ren's back. Black veins explode across Ren's arm. Ren: "AAAAAAH!"

Panel 3: The invading Curse is ripped apart into hundreds of black fragments.

Panel 1 — Full-page action panel: The school corridor has been devastated. Ren kneels in the center, surrounded by floating fragments. His classmates stare in horror. Behind Ren stands Mourn. Mourn: "We are no longer separate."

Panel 2: Extreme close-up of Ren's left eye. For one instant, his pupil becomes completely black. Ren: "...Get out of my head." Mourn: "I am not in your head." Mourn: "I am beneath your skin."

Pages 13–20 — The Exorcists Arrive

Panel 1: Emergency vehicles surround the school.

Panel 2: Ordinary authorities find unconscious students.

Panel 3: Toma walks through the wreckage wearing an Exorcist identification seal.

Panel 4: He sees Ren sitting alone.

Panel 5: Toma's expression changes dramatically. Toma: "...That's impossible."

Panel 1: Toma approaches with Shigure partially extended. Toma: "Don't move."

Panel 2: Ren: "Wasn't planning to."

Panel 3: Toma sees the black mark on Ren's arm. Toma: "What is that?" Ren: "I don't know."

Panel 4: A tiny black flare appears. Toma instantly draws Shigure.

Panel 5: Ren raises his hands. Ren: "Whoa!" Toma thrusts the spear toward Ren's chest.

Panel 1: The spear stops centimeters from Ren. Mourn's shadow-hand catches it.

Panel 2: Toma's eyes widen. Toma: "Ancient-class..."

Panel 3: Mourn turns toward him. Mourn: "Little blade."

Panel 4: Toma is thrown across the hallway.

Panel 5: Genzō steps into frame. Genzō: "Well." Beat. Genzō: "This is inconvenient."

Panel 1: Genzō casually taps his cane against the floor. SFX: TOK.

Panel 2: A circular barrier erupts.

Panel 3: Mourn's shadow crashes against it.

Panel 4: Genzō smiles. Genzō: "Good morning, child." Mourn: "You remember me." Genzō's smile disappears.

Panel 1: Ren looks between them. Ren: "You two know each other?"

Panel 2: Genzō draws his concealed blade. Genzō: "Not personally."

Panel 3: Flashback-like image: ancient ruins, bodies, Mourn's silhouette. Genzō: "But every Exorcist learns its name."

Panel 4: Ren looks horrified. Genzō: "Mourn."

Panel 5: Ren whispers: Ren: "...That's inside me?"

Panel 1: Genzō examines Ren. Genzō: "Yes."

Panel 2: Toma rises, bruised. Toma: "Then kill him."

Panel 3: Ren stares at Toma. Ren: "Excuse me?"

Panel 4: Toma grips Shigure. Toma: "If the vessel dies, the Curse may die with him."

Panel 5: Genzō interrupts. Genzō: "Maybe." Silence.

Panel 1: Genzō explains that ordinary Curses dissipate when destroyed.

Panel 2: Mourn is different: it has survived multiple centuries.

Panel 3: Ren asks: Ren: "So what happens if it takes over?"

Panel 4: Genzō looks directly at him. Genzō: "We kill you."

Panel 5: Ren's face falls.

Panel 6: Genzō adds: Genzō: "But until then, you're alive."

Panel 1: Ren looks at his classmates through the doorway.

Panel 2: They are being carried outside.

Panel 3: Ren clenches his marked hand. Ren: "If I can control it..."

Panel 4: Genzō smiles faintly. Genzō: "Then let's see what you're worth."

Pages 21–30 — Training and World-Building

Panel 1: Exterior of the hidden Exorcist headquarters beneath an old municipal archive.

Panel 2: Ren enters.

Panel 3: Dozens of weapons hang from walls.

Panel 4: Ren sees sealed jars containing miniature Curses. Ren: "You people keep these?" Genzō: "For research."

Panel 5: A jar rattles. Genzō: "Mostly."

Panel 1: Genzō draws three circles. Genzō: "Fear creates pressure."

Panel 2: Black energy accumulates. Genzō: "Regret gives it shape."

Panel 3: The energy becomes a tiny creature. Genzō: "Hatred gives it teeth."

Panel 4: Ren touches it. Genzō: "And human attention keeps it alive."

Panel 5: Ren grimaces. Ren: "So ignoring them doesn't make them disappear." Genzō: "Congratulations. You understand civilization."

Panel 1: Toma trains alone.

Panel 2: He performs precise spear forms.

Panel 3: Ren watches. Ren: "You people train like this every day?"

Panel 4: Toma stops. Toma: "If you want to survive, yes."

Panel 5: Ren notices the spear's supernatural edge. Ren: "Can that thing cut Mourn?"

Panel 6: Toma looks at him. Toma: "No." Beat. Toma: "But it can cut what Mourn is attached to."
