Unfinished Dark Romance

Rain had blurred the ink, but Mara could still read the two things that mattered: eleven-thirty, and a name she had never heard before.

Silas Rook.

She held the torn note beneath the club’s red awning, shielding it from the weather with her palm. The paper smelled of river water and the sharp, metallic tang of the harbor. One corner had been ripped away so violently that a few black fibers stood up like bristles.

Below the name, someone had written: Ask about the room beneath the room.

Mara looked through the club’s dark windows. Music pulsed behind the glass, low enough to feel in her ribs. Bodies moved in the red light, indistinct and elegant, but no one appeared to be watching the woman outside with wet hair, a soaked coat, and a secret she had carried three days too long.

She wanted answers about Elias Vale.

Not comfort. Not another rumor whispered by someone who vanished before she could ask a second question. Answers. Where he had gone. Who had taken him. Whether he was still alive.

Most of all, she wanted to hear his name spoken by someone who had seen him after the night he disappeared.

She pushed through the club door.

Warmth closed around her, carrying the smells of spilled liquor, damp wool, and expensive perfume. A trumpet moaned from somewhere beyond the main room. The floor shone black beneath the lamps, slick with rain tracked in by strangers.

At the bar, a woman in a silver dress glanced at Mara’s note. Her gaze lingered on the name.

“Private rooms are upstairs,” she said.

“I’m not looking for one.”

“That’s fortunate.” The woman wiped a glass with a white cloth. “They aren’t looking for you.”

Mara placed the note on the bar. “I’m here to meet Silas Rook.”

The cloth stopped moving.

For half a second, the woman’s face revealed something - recognition, perhaps, or fear. Then it vanished beneath a bored smile.

“Names cost more than drinks.”

“I was told he’d answer my questions.”

“Then you were told wrong.”

A man appeared at Mara’s shoulder. She felt him before she saw him: the heat of his body, the faint scent of cedar and smoke. He wore a black shirt with the sleeves rolled to his forearms. A thin scar crossed one knuckle. He did not touch her, but the space between them narrowed until her skin noticed.

“Rook doesn’t meet people in the bar,” he said.

His voice was quiet. It carried anyway.

Mara turned. He was younger than she expected from the authority in his tone, though not young. His face had the severe beauty of something carved rather than born - dark eyes, straight mouth, hair still damp from the rain. A silver ring marked his right hand.

“Then take me to him.”

His gaze dropped to the note. “You brought proof.”

“I brought an appointment.”

“No.” He lifted his eyes again. “You brought bait.”

The bartender’s glass made a soft click against the counter.

Mara folded the note and tucked it inside her coat. “Do you know where Elias Vale is?”

The man’s expression did not change, but the stillness around him did. The music seemed farther away.

“I know you shouldn’t say that name here.”

“Why?”

“Because this room has ears.”

He looked toward the mirrored wall behind the bar. Mara followed his gaze. At first she saw only bottles and reflections: the bartender, the red lights, her own pale face.

Then she noticed the tiny black lenses set between the shelves.

One above the mirror. Two beneath the bar. Another hidden in the brass ornament on the wall.

Her stomach tightened.

The man leaned closer, not enough to touch. “If you want to leave, leave now.”

“And if I stay?”

“You pay.”

“With money?”

His mouth curved without warmth. “Not tonight.”

He took the note from her before she could stop him. His fingers brushed hers - brief, deliberate contact. His hand was warm. The shock of it traveled up her wrist and made her angry at herself for noticing.

He read the name, then turned the paper over. “Who gave you this?”

“Someone who knew I’d come.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“It’s the one you get.”

His eyes sharpened. “You came for a missing man and still think you’re the one asking questions.”

Mara snatched the note back. “You’re assuming I need you.”

“I’m assuming you walked into a club that doesn’t advertise, asked for a man who doesn’t exist on any public record, and said the name of someone who disappeared without telling the police everything you know.” He paused. “You need someone.”

The last words landed too close.

She had not told the police about the key.

It had been in Elias’s apartment, taped beneath the drawer of his writing desk. A small iron key with a number stamped into its bow: 19. She had found it the night before the police arrived, and she had slipped it into her pocket instead of handing it over.

Because Elias had once told her, laughing, that the police were very good at finding what people wanted hidden and terrible at understanding why it mattered.

Because the key had been warm when she found it.

Because she had been afraid.
