Key Concepts

Knowing letter names and sounds helps you read and write words. When you match sounds to letters, you can sound out new words like they are puzzle pieces.

• Each letter has a name (A, B, C…) and a sound (aa, buh, kuh…).
• Some letters have common sounds you will hear often in words.
• You can match a letter to its sound, like matching a sock to a foot.
• You can blend sounds together to make a word you can say, like “c-u-p” → “cup”.
• When you see a word, you can read it step by step: sound, sound, then blend.

Key Terms

Letter name - the letter’s “name” like A, B, C.

Letter sound - the sound the letter often makes like /a/ or “buh”.

Match - to pair two things that go together, like the same picture.

Blend - to push sounds together so they become a word you can say.

Sound - a noise you hear, like a car “vroom”.

Word - a group of sounds that means something, like “cat” or “sun”.
