Moonlight Bedtime Stories

The blanket was tucked just right around Luna’s toes, and her room smelled like clean pajamas and lavender soap. The night light on her shelf was off, so the air felt cool and quiet, like the first minute after the bath when the water is gone. Luna lay on her pillow and listened to the soft click of the wall clock. Then she reached out for the moon-shaped lamp on her bedside table.

“Moon lamp, glow please,” Luna whispered.

The lamp sat there like a smooth, sleepy moon - white and quiet, with a tiny smiling face painted on it. Luna pressed the button with one careful finger. Click. Nothing. She pressed again, harder this time, and her hand made a little thump against the table. Still nothing. The room stayed dark, and the corners looked bigger than usual, like when you put a toy under the couch and it hides from you.

You could almost hear Luna’s worry, even when she tried not to. “Maybe it’s tired,” she said softly to the lamp, as if it could feel her words. “But it’s bedtime. Bedtime isn’t for tired lamps.”

“We can help it,” Luna told you, because when things feel hard, you can feel steadier when someone is with you. She sat up and hugged her blanket to her chest. The moon lamp didn’t glow, and the shadow of her stuffed rabbit looked extra long on the wall.

Luna tried a new idea. She leaned close and blew a gentle “whoosh” at the lamp, like blowing on hot cocoa to cool it. “Wake up,” she said, careful and kind. The air smelled faintly like her breath and the warm blanket. But the lamp stayed dark.

Then Luna noticed something. The curtains were pulled almost all the way shut, and a thin strip of moonlight peeked through the smallest gap. The strip was pale and bright, like a stripe of milk in a bowl. Luna smiled a little. “Oh! The moon helps the moon!”

She scooted her chair closer, listening to the quiet squeak of the legs. “Moonlight,” she murmured, and she gently lifted the curtain with one hand. The fabric felt soft and cool, and it moved like a slow wave. The lamp still didn’t turn all at once, but now the painted moon on it looked less sleepy - more awake - like it was remembering how to shine.

Luna pressed the button again. This time, the moon lamp gave a tiny glow, a warm little smile of light. It didn’t chase every shadow away, but it made the room feel safer, like a night garden with one friendly firefly.

“See?” Luna whispered. “Even when it’s not bright yet, it can still help.”
