Magical School

A warm breeze smelled like cinnamon toast when Milo stepped onto the front steps of Sparkle School of Magic. The stones were smooth under his shoes, and the doors shone like they’d been polished by moonlight. In his pocket, his silly buttons clinked softly-round as marbles, bright as candy, and just a little bit bouncy.

“Wow,” you could say, but Milo didn’t just say it. He grinned. He held his backpack strap tight, because new places can feel wiggly inside your tummy. A little bell above the door went ding-ding, and the sound twirled in the air like a tiny song.

Then a fox popped up from behind a flower pot. Zuzu was the kind of talking fox who looked friendly and neat, with orange fur and a white patch shaped like a smile. “Hello, Milo!” Zuzu said, as if you’d always known him. “Welcome to Sparkle School. We use our magic kindly.”

Milo blinked. “Magic… kindly?” His pocket buttons made a happy tap-tap sound, like they agreed.

Zuzu nodded and pointed her tail toward a chalkboard that read, in swirly letters, Kind Magic Rules. “Rule one,” Zuzu said, “We help with our hearts.” She tapped the chalk with a paw. “Rule two, we don’t grab or blame. If something is lost, we look together.”

Just then, Milo’s homework scroll felt lighter than before. He patted his pockets-zip, zip, zip-until his fingers found only lint and silly buttons. “Uh-oh,” Milo whispered. “My Helpful Wish scroll… poofed!”

Zuzu’s ears perked. “Paw-prints?” she asked. She sniffed the air near the entry rug. It smelled like clean wool and sweet soap. “I smell glittery ink,” Zuzu added, and her voice turned curious, not worried.

Milo leaned close to the floor. Sparkles-tiny, glittery specks-lined up like trail crumbs from the rug edge to a small door marked Practice Room. “Maybe it slipped,” Milo said. He tried to open the door, but the handle wouldn’t budge. It made a soft boing noise, like a springy toy refusing to play.

Zuzu sat beside him and listened to the door. “Sometimes doors like polite words,” she said. “Say what you need, then try again.”

Milo swallowed his worry and smiled. “Hello, door. Please let us practice,” he said gently. He and Zuzu pressed their palms to the handle together.

The handle warmed up like a sunny rock, and the little door swung open with a whoosh of fresh air. Inside, a scroll rolled neatly in a basket, dusted with glitter like it had been sprinkled on purpose.

Milo let out a happy laugh. “You found it with kindness!”

Zuzu winked. “Kind Magic Rules work like teamwork-one plus one makes a bigger smile.”

Milo held up the scroll carefully, and you could almost hear it sparkle. “We did it together,” he said. “What should my Helpful Wish be-something for a friend, something for the class, or something for a pet?”
