River And His Animal Friends

The gate at River’s front yard was open a little, just enough for the breeze to wiggle in. You could hear birds making small chirps, and you could smell warm grass and clean air. River stood on the path with his four friends nearby, their shapes familiar like toys in a row - cool and steady.

Pear Bear the big black dog with a white chest sat close to the gate, his nose pointing down like he was reading the ground. Pea Coat the goat took slow steps, like a bouncing bean. Hurry the turtle moved with a tiny, steady pace, his shell catching the light. River watched their faces and felt safe, because his friends were right there.

Then River heard a sound from Pear Bear’s chest area - low at first, like a drum far away. “Whuff… woof!” Pear Bear’s mouth opened wide, and the sound popped loud in the yard. River blinked, then jumped back one quick step. His hands came up to his cheeks, and his eyes got round.

Pear Bear looked pleased, not mean. “Woof!” he tried again, like he was showing you something important. Pea Coat chewed calmly, and Hurry kept going, step by step, slow as a story book turning pages.

River took a careful breath. “Pear Bear… what do you smell?” you could almost hear River asking with his face. Pear Bear pressed his nose closer to the grass, sniffing and sniffing, his white-chested fur warm in the sunlight. The air smelled different now - like a little hint of something sweet and something old, like leaves that had fallen.

Pear Bear huffed and wiggled his ears. “Woof!” he said softly this time, like a clue instead of a surprise. River leaned forward a tiny bit, then stopped. “That woof is big,” River whispered, and his voice sounded small in the loud air.

Pear Bear turned his head toward River, then back to the ground, as if saying, “Come see.” River took another step, staying close enough to hold his brave. The grass felt cool under his shoes, and the smell-finder nose kept working.
