The Little Firefly Who Forgot How To Glow

A soft rain of sparkles drifted up from the ferns as Finn landed on a mossy stone. The air smelled like sweet sap and cool earth, and when he blinked his little light flickered - warm, yes, but smaller than the glow that shimmered around him. Nearby fireflies bobbed in the night like floating lanterns, their lights round and bright, painting the leaves in gold.

Finn lifted his wings higher, trying to make his glow match the others. He watched closely, as if staring hard enough could change what his body felt like. His light bobbled and pulsed, then settled back into a gentle glow that looked, to him, like a tiny candle beside a campfire.

Luna dropped beside him with a flutter of quiet wings. Her light flicked in friendly patterns, like she was speaking without words. “You’re here,” she said, and her voice sounded like a warm breeze through grass. “I was hoping you’d come to the Night Glow Walk.”

Finn tried to smile. “I came,” he said. “But… do you see that?” He angled his body so Luna could look at his light. It didn’t feel bright enough for anyone to notice, and the thought made his throat feel tight.

Luna tilted her head. Her glow widened across the leaves, steady and kind. “I see your light,” she said. “It’s working.”

“It’s just smaller,” Finn whispered. The word smaller felt heavy, as if it had roots. “Everyone else looks like they’re shining so much more.”

Luna’s antennae brushed his wing in a small, careful touch. “Sometimes lights look different,” she said. “Like how raindrops look different on a leaf than on a stone. The forest has its own way of showing things.”

Finn wanted to believe her. He really did. Still, when he looked around, his eyes kept finding the brightest glowing fireflies first, as if his worry had trained them to do it. He saw Pip the Frog hopping along a fallen branch, his light bouncing with every hop. He saw Bella the Butterfly drifting nearby, her glow gentle as honey. Even Ollie the Owl perched in the low branches, blinking slowly as if he could see the glow behind the glow.

Finn swallowed. “Maybe mine is… wrong.”

Luna’s light softened, and she leaned closer until Finn could feel the warmth of it on his cheeks. “Wrong is not the word I’d use,” she said. “You’re still glowing.”

Before Finn could answer, a ripple of sound moved through the forest. It wasn’t loud, but it was noticeable - like the hush that happens when a song is about to begin. Fireflies gathered under a canopy of leaves that shimmered with tiny dew drops, each drop catching light and letting it sparkle again.

Grandpa Glow arrived as if the forest had been saving a space for him. His glow was steady and golden, like sunlight that decided to stay up all night. He landed on a broad root and blinked slowly at the gathering. When he spoke, his voice sounded smooth and calm, like warm tea.

“Tonight,” Grandpa Glow said, “we walk beneath the Lantern Leaves.”

A few fireflies chimed in with happy flickers. Finn watched Grandpa Glow’s light, trying to measure himself against it. His own glow seemed to shrink even more in that comparison. He could feel the worry buzzing under his wings, making his body feel too light and too small at the same time.

Luna nudged him. “Breathe,” she murmured, like she’d done it a hundred times before.

Finn tried. He smelled damp bark and the cool, clean scent of night air. His worry didn’t disappear, but it loosened its grip just a little.

Pip the Frog hopped up beside them, grinning with his whole face. “Lantern Leaves!” he said, and his light bounced like it was excited. “I love when the forest turns into a glowing tunnel. It feels like we’re all wearing little stars.”

Bella the Butterfly drifted in close, her wings whispering against the air. “And it feels safe,” she added, her voice soft. “Like the night is holding us.”

Finn nodded, though his eyes kept returning to the places where other lights looked brighter. He didn’t mean to compare. It just happened, like a habit his worry had started.

Ollie the Owl blinked once, then twice. “You’re watching your light the way some creatures watch a puddle,” he said. “If you stare long enough, you forget the sky is bigger.”

Finn looked up at Ollie. “Is it supposed to feel like this?” he asked. “Like I’m glowing, but not enough?”

Ollie’s feathers rustled gently as he shifted his perch. “All lights have their own shape,” he said. “Even when they look different, they still belong.”

Finn’s heart thumped once, quick and bright, then sank again. “But what if mine doesn’t belong?” he asked. The question slipped out before he could stop it.

Luna’s light flickered with worry, but her voice stayed steady. “Belonging isn’t something you measure with brightness,” she said. “It’s something you feel when you’re with friends.”

Grandpa Glow lifted a wing toward the forest path. “Walk together,” he said. “And if anyone feels small, we remember that the smallest light can light a way.”

Finn didn’t want to ruin the night by thinking too much....
