Hearts In Motion

Mara arrived with Adrian Voss’s name already under her tongue like a secret she had promised herself not to speak.

The Marrowick Grand received her in a wash of candlelight and music. Brass sconces burned along the marble walls, their flames trembling whenever the ballroom doors opened. Beyond them, chandeliers scattered gold over silk gowns, black tails, and the polished floor where couples moved as if no one had ever been abandoned there.

She paused beneath the carved archway, one gloved hand resting against the cool stone.

Find him, she thought.

No. Don’t.

Both commands carried the same ache.

“Mara.” Celia Hart appeared at her side, bright-eyed and breathless from the stairs. “You look as though you’re deciding whether to enter a ballroom or a battlefield.”

“Those are not mutually exclusive tonight.”

Celia glanced toward the crowd. “You heard he was coming.”

Mara smoothed the fold of her ivory sleeve. “I heard the Voss Foundation was sponsoring the auction.”

“That is not what I said.”

“No,” Mara replied, stepping into the ballroom. “It isn’t.”

The orchestra played something light and expensive, all quick strings and soft percussion. The air smelled of beeswax, champagne, and roses arranged in tall crystal bowls. Mara kept her chin level as she moved through the room, accepting greetings from people who knew her family name better than they knew her.

Ellison.

The name traveled ahead of her. She saw it in the slight lift of brows, the pause before a smile. Her father’s company had collapsed three years ago, but the stain of it remained useful conversation for anyone bored by the weather.

She had come for one reason: to pass through this room unnoticed by Adrian.

That was the lie she had dressed herself in.

Near the auction table, a man with silver hair leaned toward a woman in emerald silk. “The Ellisons have nerve, appearing here.”

Mara heard him because he wanted her to.

The woman’s gaze slid over Mara’s dress. “Perhaps nerve is all they have left.”

Celia’s fingers closed around Mara’s elbow. “We can leave.”

“If I leave now, they’ll call it confirmation.”

“Of what?”

“That they were right to whisper.”

Mara lifted a champagne flute from a passing tray. The glass was cold against her palm. “Then I’ll stay until they find something more interesting.”

Celia studied her. “And Adrian?”

Mara looked across the room.

He stood beside the tall windows, half turned toward a trustee from the foundation. Adrian wore a black dinner jacket without a visible crease, his dark hair swept back from his forehead. The years since she had last seen him had sharpened him rather than changed him. His mouth still held that restrained, private curve that had once made her feel chosen whenever it appeared for her alone.

Now he was smiling at someone else.

As if he felt her attention, his gaze crossed the room.

For one suspended second, Adrian saw her.

His expression did not break. That was the humiliation of it. No surprise. No hesitation. Only recognition, precise and controlled, followed by a small inclination of his head.

A formal greeting.

Then he turned away.

Mara’s grip tightened around the glass until the stem pressed into her glove.

Celia swore softly. “He did not just - ”

“He did.”

“Do you want me to spill something on him?”

“Tempting.”

“Name the fabric.”

Mara gave a laugh that came out too thin. “I’m not letting him make me ridiculous twice in one evening.”

The orchestra shifted into a waltz. Couples began to gather near the center of the floor. Adrian’s companion said something to him, and Adrian answered without looking at Mara again.

She told herself she was relieved.

Then he crossed the ballroom.

Not toward her. Past her.

The movement was deliberate enough to feel like a hand pressed against her back. He passed within arm’s reach, carrying the scent of cedar and rain, familiar in a way that struck beneath the ribs. His sleeve brushed the air beside hers. He did not slow.

Mara watched his reflection in the dark window until it disappeared among the dancers.

“Breathe,” Celia said.

“I am breathing.”

“You’re holding a glass like it owes you money.”

Mara set it on a nearby table. “I need air.”

The terrace doors stood open at the far end of the ballroom, but reaching them meant crossing the dance floor. She took one step.

A waiter moved into her path. Then a pair of laughing women. Then a man who bowed too deeply and apologized without moving aside. The ballroom seemed to rearrange itself around her, every passage narrowing just as she approached it.

“Mara Ellison?” A broad-shouldered gentleman blocked her near the musicians. “I thought your family had withdrawn from society.”

His smile was polished, his eyes not.

“Society survived the loss,” she said.

A few people nearby heard. Their attention turned, quick and hungry.

He chuckled. “Good. Still sharp.”

“Only when cornered.”

The man’s smile thinned. “And are you cornered tonight?”
