Mina Sparkwood’s backpack bounced against her shoulders as she walked past the last row of tidy houses, the evening air smelling like warm bread from a corner bakery. Then, between two buildings, a thin strip of light flickered - like a comic panel catching ink in the sun. It wasn’t bright the way a streetlamp was bright. It glowed in bright little bursts, green and gold, as if someone had drawn a warning sign and forgotten to erase the lines.

The glow pulsed once, then twice, and the sound came right after the light: a soft, papery rustle, like pages turning too fast. Mina stopped so quickly her shoelace squeaked. “Okay,” she whispered to herself, because whispering made her feel braver. “That’s not normal.”

Panel Alley sat just ahead, a narrow street that always looked a little funny, like the buildings were squished together for a joke. Tonight, though, it looked wrong in a new way. The walls seemed to shift with the glow, their brick lines stretching and snapping back, as if the alley was being redrawn while she watched. Mina’s hands hovered near her jacket pockets, searching for her phone and finding only lint and the cool edge of her coin purse. The air tasted metallic, like pennies on your tongue.

Mina took one careful step toward the alley. The light flared brighter, and a faint symbol appeared in the space between her and the glow - wrist-sized, quick as a blink. It wasn’t a letter she recognized. It looked like a little starburst wrapped in a curved line, like a badge stamped onto the air.

A comic-style warning should mean stop, she thought. But her brain also said: find out. She had always been the kind of kid who noticed when something didn’t match the rest of the picture. And this didn’t match anything.

“Hello?” Mina called, because even strange things felt less strange when you spoke to them. Her voice sounded small between the buildings, swallowed by the alley’s narrowness.

The glow answered by shifting - green to gold to green again - like it was tapping on glass. Then, right in front of her, a new panel appeared on the wall. It wasn’t painted on like normal art. It looked like the bricks themselves had become a flat picture: a row of tiny shapes marched along the edge of the alley, each shape stamped with the same wrist-sized symbol Mina had seen in the air.

A chilly gust slid past her, and Mina shivered. “That’s like… a message,” she murmured. The rustling sound grew louder, and with it came a feeling that the alley was waiting for her to move. Not chasing her with teeth or claws - just pulling her in with a steady, bright insistence.

She backed up one step, but the glow followed. Not in a way that felt like footsteps. More like the light kept drawing itself farther along the alley, always staying a little ahead of her. Mina tried another step backward, and the symbol on the wall blinked out and reappeared closer to her feet.

“Hey!” Mina said, surprised to hear her own voice firm. “If you’re trying to warn me, you’re doing it the hard way.”

The alley didn’t argue. It only pulsed again, and the air around Mina felt thicker, like she was walking through the edge of a bubble. Her stomach tightened, but her mind stayed busy. If it was a warning, it would have a meaning. If it was a comic-style glow, it would follow comic rules - panels, sequences, and clear pictures.

Mina reached out and touched the wall near the glow. Her fingertip met something that felt cool and smooth, like a sticker pressed onto brick. The surface didn’t smear, but tiny lines shimmered under her skin, as if the wall had ink inside it.

She yanked her hand back. “Oof. Okay. So it’s real.” The glow pulsed, and a small panel popped up on the wall like a speech bubble without words. In it, the wrist symbol appeared again, brighter than before.

Mina swallowed and tried to think like a reader. Speech bubbles meant someone had something to say. Panels meant order. The shapes marching along the edge looked like they were stepping from one spot to another.

“I can do order,” Mina said, though her voice wobbled. “I can do reading.”

She took a slow breath, in through her nose, out through her mouth, and stepped sideways along the alley wall, keeping her hand close but not touching again. The glowing shapes on the wall didn’t move at random. They lined up in a path, each tiny stamped symbol spaced like checkpoints. When Mina matched her steps to the spacing, the rustling sound softened, like the alley was listening.

“See?” Mina whispered. “It’s like a trail.”

But when she reached the second checkpoint, the glow shifted suddenly. The next panel didn’t appear where she expected. Instead, the alley’s brick lines stretched, and the space between buildings seemed to narrow, making Mina feel like she’d stepped into a narrower picture frame. The light flared brighter, and the rustle became a quick flutter, like fast pages flipping.
