Puppies And Kittens Bedtime

Puddles made a shine on Milo’s bedroom rug by the doorway. The room felt cool and dim, like a bedtime blanket fresh from the drawer. Milo’s nose twitched as wet carpet smell drifted in, and his paws made tiny squish-squash sounds when he tried to scoot closer to his favorite spot.

“You can be cozy,” you can almost hear Milo whisper to himself, but the puddles kept spreading, little splashes jumping onto his blanket. Milo blinked slow, sleepy and warm, then flinched when a fresh drop tapped his blanket like a gentle tap-tap. We can’t sleep with wet toes, Milo thought, and you can feel how he wants his bed spot right now.

Milo looked at his blanket. It was his soft, safe island, the one he liked to curl up on. “Not there,” he mumbled, sliding his belly away from the wet edge. A faint sound came from the hallway too - soft meows, small and wiggly, like a kitten trying to say hello but feeling shy.

“Is someone lost?” Milo asked you, because asking makes things feel calmer. He took one careful step, then another, avoiding the shiny puddle as if it were a puddle on a sidewalk after rain. The rug felt bumpy under his paw pads, and the air smelled like damp walls and sleepy laundry.

Milo tried a first plan. He nudged his blanket corner with his nose, pulling it a little farther from the splashes. “Scoot, please,” he said. The blanket slid a bit, but a new puddle bump splashed up, and Milo’s ears drooped.

Then he tried something else. He stared at the wet path by the doorway, watching where the drops came from. “Maybe it’s dripping from over there,” he said, turning his head toward the hallway.

That’s when a tiny gray kitten slipped out from behind the closet door. Her fur looked like soft smoke, and her eyes were round and bright in the dim light. “Mrrp… meow,” she squeaked, as if her voice was small on purpose. Milo gasped quietly. “Hi,” he told her, and you could hear the kindness in his tone. “Are you making the meows?”

The kitten sat very still, then blinked. Her tiny paws twitched, like they wanted to run, but her whiskers wiggled toward Milo’s dry corner. “Are you cold?” Milo asked.

The kitten answered with another soft meow, and this time Milo noticed something: she kept looking at the doorway, not at Milo’s blanket. “Oh,” he said, and his tail gave a slow, careful wag. “You’re not the puddle. You’re just here.”

So Milo and you helped together. Milo scooted his blanket inch by inch toward the driest part of the rug, and the kitten padded after him, stepping around the shiny spots like they were stepping-stones. When the blanket finally touched Milo’s fur - dry and warm - he sighed, cozy at last.

“Mrrp… meow,” the kitten said again, right at Milo’s blanket edge.

Milo smiled at the kitten, even though her tiny meows made the quiet feel busy. “We’re tucked in,” he said softly, “but you’re starting a new problem.”

The kitten’s paws went wiggle-wiggle, and the room smelled less like damp and more like bedtime.
