Chapter 1: The Glittery Ice Cave

High Five padded forward with careful paws, like he was tiptoeing through a giant, quiet snow globe. The air felt colder than the last place he’d been. Every step made a soft crunch, the kind of sound sugar snow might make if sugar had shoes.

Then he saw it - a cave of ice.

Not a dark, scary cave. This one sparkled. Icicles hung from the ceiling like tiny glass bells. When the wind slipped in and out, the icicles gave little clink-clink sounds, as if they were trying to sing.

High Five leaned closer. The icy walls glittered with frosty swirls, like someone had painted with a careful, icy hand. Some swirls looked like ribbons. Some looked like delicate feathers. And when High Five breathed out, the sparkles near his face seemed to brighten, almost like the cave was saying, “Oh! You’re here. I see you.”

“Hello?” High Five called softly, just in case the cave was sensitive to loud voices. He wanted to be friendly, not noisy.

His breath puffed out in a cool mist. The mist drifted in front of him and disappeared, but the sparkles shimmered again, as if they liked his gentle curiosity.

“Buzzby?” High Five tried again, still careful. “Are you around?”

No answer popped out right away. Instead, High Five heard something else - the faint sound of icicles clinking as the air moved. The cave felt alive with tiny sounds, like it was holding its breath to listen back.

High Five remembered what safety felt like. He didn’t rush. He didn’t poke his nose into dark corners. He kept his paws where the ice looked steady and smooth. And he stayed close enough that he could easily turn around if he needed to.

He walked a little farther in, then stopped. Right in front of him, the ice floor dipped slightly. It wasn’t dangerous, but it was slippery. High Five tested it with a gentle tap of one paw, then shifted his weight carefully.

“Okay,” he whispered to himself. “Slow and steady.”

He noticed the icicles above were closer here. Some were thin and sharp-looking, so he made sure not to stand underneath them. He looked to the side instead, scanning for a path that felt safe.

Next, High Five practiced his voice.

He took a calm breath, then spoke in a warm, friendly tone. “Buzzby. I’m here. Are you okay?”

He waited a moment. The cave didn’t boom. It didn’t echo loudly. The sounds stayed small and friendly, like his words were being carried on a soft breeze.

Then he tried again, even gentler. “Buzzby, it’s High Five.”

This time, the sparkles seemed to brighten in a different spot. Not everywhere. Just near a wall where a line of icy swirls curved like a doorway-shaped path. High Five didn’t touch it right away. He studied it first, the way you might look at a puzzle before you pick up the pieces.

He leaned back slightly and checked his surroundings again. Safe paws. Clear path. No rushing.

“I think… I found something,” High Five said softly, like he didn’t want to startle the cave.

The glittery ice wall reflected his eyes in tiny flashes. The icicles above made their quiet clink. And High Five, with his careful steps and friendly voice, moved toward the doorway-shaped swirls.

He didn’t know what Buzzby was doing in here. But he knew one thing for sure - he was exploring the right way.
