Rainbow Ant And Mint Beetle

The sugar door of the small candy house clicked softly as Rainbow pushed it open with her two tiny feelers. Outside, Rainbow Forest smelled like sweet sap and warm leaves. A cool breeze tapped the edge of the doorway, and Little Mint Green scooted closer to Rainbow, his shell shining mint-green in the light.

“Ready?” Rainbow asked, and her voice sounded like a little crumb falling onto a plate.

Little Mint Green nodded, wings folded neatly. “Food first,” he said, then his antennae wiggled. “And playing soon. I like when the day smells like both.”

They stepped out together onto the candy-sweet path that led away from their home. The ground under them felt firm and dry, but the air still carried the gentle, cozy smell of the candy house behind. Rainbow took a careful sniff, then began to walk toward the places where they usually found yummy things to munch.

That was when Rainbow’s foot brushed something cool and flat.

She stopped. The sound of her tiny steps became quiet in the hush of the forest. On the ground lay a piece of paper, pale and smooth, like a leaf that forgot to be green. Rainbow touched it with one feeler. The paper didn’t crumble. It felt like it had been waiting.

Little Mint Green leaned in until his mint-green face was right beside the paper. “What is it?” he whispered, as if the paper might be shy.

Rainbow picked it up carefully. The paper was light, but it seemed important, like a tiny drum. As she held it, the forest sounds - rustling leaves and soft buzzing - blurred for a moment. Her rainbow stripes seemed to brighten, as if they were listening too.

She read the note out loud as best she could, sounding out the words slowly, one line at a time.

“Dear Rainbow and Little Mint Green,” Rainbow began. “You are about to have a big adventure.”

Little Mint Green’s legs paused mid-walk. “A big adventure?” he repeated, like he was tasting the words.

Rainbow kept reading, her feelers tightening around the paper. “You are going to walk out of the Rainbow Forest. First, go to a doll shop in the city (Rainbow Japan claw).”

Little Mint Green blinked. “A city?” he asked. His voice went softer. “We don’t usually go that far.”

Rainbow nodded even though he couldn’t see it fully. “Let’s keep reading,” she said, steadying her tone the way she did when she found a tricky crumb trail.

The note continued, and Rainbow’s eyes moved faster. “In the Rainbow Forest, you must find 25 blue-green cakes in exchange for money, $100 per cake, a total of $2500.”

Little Mint Green let out a small sound, not unhappy, just surprised. “Twenty-five cakes?” he said. “That’s a lot of searching.”

Rainbow looked down at the paper again. The words felt like little stepping-stones - too many to jump over at once, but possible if they moved carefully.

She read the next part, and her voice grew a little careful, too. “In the doll shop, there are more than 1,000 different snacks, fruits, vegetables and meat. $1 per game. You need to bring two eco-friendly bags.”

Little Mint Green’s antennae bounced. “Two bags,” he said. “One can hold at least 25 cakes. And the other can hold 1,000 pieces of food.”

Rainbow held the paper closer to the light. She could feel the coolness of the paper against her warm paws. “We have to have the right bags,” she said, thinking quickly. “If we don’t, we might not fit everything we need.”

Little Mint Green tilted his head toward Rainbow’s candy-house doorway, as if he could see the bags waiting inside. “But what about our daily food hunt?” he asked. “We always go out together from the doorway. We always find things here.”

Rainbow looked at him, then at the forest path. The note said they were about to walk out of the Rainbow Forest, and that felt like a door opening in her mind - wide and new, but also bigger than she expected.

She took one breath that smelled like leaf dust and minty air. “We can still begin today,” Rainbow said. “We’ll start right where we are. We’ll find the blue-green cakes. Then we’ll figure out the bags and the rest.”

Little Mint Green’s worry didn’t vanish, but it softened at her words. “Okay,” he said. “We’ll do the searching part first.”

They turned back toward the spots they knew - the places where the forest liked to hide little surprises. Rainbow stepped carefully over a patch of moss that felt springy, and Little Mint Green crawled around a twig that smelled like dry cinnamon.

“Blue-green cakes,” Rainbow murmured, as if saying it helped her eyes find the right color. “Not just any cakes. Blue-green.”

They tried one spot near a smooth stone that always looked cool, even when the sun warmed the leaves. Rainbow leaned her face close, sniffing and scanning. Little Mint Green tapped the ground gently with his feet, listening for anything that sounded different.

“Maybe the cakes are under here,” Little Mint Green suggested.

Rainbow poked with her feelers. The stone didn’t lift easily, and the ground under it felt like solid earth....
